Past generations have fought and died under that flag.
The union jack is part of our history. There's no point being an ostrich about that.

i don't feel strongly about it but having another country's flag on your own flag is daft.

mate, have you served in the armed services? if you have have - thank you - if you haven't, what makes you think you can speak for those who have?

You will have zero influence on who would be "elder" (head of state ) as red cuban bandana wants it to be called either - the pollies at federal/state and territorial level will pick the candidates and you will forced to vote for someone who you had no choice in selecting to be a candidate and basically a bunch of candidates that most would never had heard of- Nepotism too a pollie retiring becomes a candidate.

Banging on that anyone can be head or state is bunkum a con job

Red cuban bandana likes that model as it's like the old soviet union days where the party picked the candidates - yes people voted but there was only one candidate for their region/oblast.

It is one and the same though the issue of a republic and the flag they go hand in hand - do you think if people voted to become a republic the flag stays the same - It won't and could end up with some monstrosity of a flag that is forced on people as well - pollies pick the possible flag designs as well

Paddo Colt 61 would want something like the following - red cuban bandana as well no doubt

can't see it costing that much and we'll save on not having to finance royal tours. no need to change names etc overnight, if at all.
australia will have its own head of state at some time. if the proposal fails at a referendum then the issue will come back every ten years or so until a yes vote is achieved. better to get it passed and put the issue to bed.
It will cost billions and what changes naff all except pollies have more power as they select the candidates to be elder/head of state and you are forced to vote for someone they choose and you cannot even be a candidate yourself.

Total nonsense the whole idea and a con job to boot - anything suggested by red cuban bandana or developed by him such as the "republican" model should be avoided at all cost. - I bet he is lining himself up to be this elder/head of state or his wifey and pollies will be selecting their mates and ex or soon to retire pollies - nepotsm will be rampant as it's a 5 year job

PM is paid 550k a year so how much will this elder/head of state be paid- something the same or more in being a higher role and not forgetting free accomodation/food/drinks /driver and car /security /staff and what not - there are very few royal tours one has to say.

As Gus Gould would say - no no no no no

It is not "daft"...it is history.

The 2nd part of your response confuses me.
My statement cannot be construed as "speaking for those who have". I was just stating a fact.

Oh how dare people unite and finally let loose as a nation after nearly 2 years of lockdown and go celebrate something that will never be seen again by ANYONE. How is that fawning or being vacuous? It's called having a bloody good time, something that some of you desperately need by the sounds of things. A drink or two, a dance and waving your hands in the air like you just don't care. Celebrating life, love, family, public service, sporting achievements, music, theatre, the arts and saving the plant. Nothing wrong with any of that. 70 years of it..some of us never even live to be 70, let alone make a commitment like that. Some of you can't even commit to 7 minutes without blowing your stacks about something or other.

The last time I was in London was in 2011 and so was Horrie Hastings as we happened to be travelling at the same time over there. We didn't actually get to meet up due to the riots and all the looting and violence and smashed properties..is that what some on here would rather be reading about? I consider England my second home and my father was very proud to be a WWII soldier so that the rest of you could have a better life. Not one person in that enormous crowd appeared to be causing any problems or starting fights or rioting. It was beautiful, elegant, clean and classy. Just what the world needs to see these days.

As for Prince Charles, not exactly my favourite person, but if some of you took the time to do your research, he was way ahead of his time in terms of environmental impact studies. I saw a clip of a documentary filmed in 1973 wherehe was showing plastic rubbish collected from somewhere and dumped on a table for the camera crew. Yet we all tune into The War On Waste or take part in Clean Up Australia Day like it was groundbreaking..or take our own shopping bags (Roosters ones of course) to the supermarket like we are some sort of virtuous pioneering heroes.

Golly there are some miserable people on this forum lately (don't get me started on the hateful threads in the main section of the forum about our players. That is disgusting and shouldn't be allowed). Maybe going outside, sitting in the sun and talking to some plants and trees and appreciating their beauty might help with your demeanours and tempers.

My vote is no to a republic. I suppose some of you would be happy if a contestant from Big Brother would end up as President..

lol - i think there'd just be the sound of crickets in here if that was the case. maybe that would be an improvement?! but nah, different perspectives based on different experience can be useful.

fair enough but i don't think the fact that because we had that flag when we went to war means we have to keep it. australians fought under it, not for it. you can still honour and respect those who fought for the country but change the flag. it would be daft not to acknowledge that the uk has been an important part of our history but that doesn't mean you have to put their flag on ours.

in response to ks - the issue of our flag and becoming a republic are related but they're separate. look at canada - even having a foreigner as your head of state doesn't guarantee that you'll have the union jack on your flag.
i'd be happy with a change of flag, something that is recognisably australian - what's wrong with a simple green and gold flag with a kangaroo?

LOL. The above is a rant of epic proportions. Watching two minutes of the jubilee gave me a sense of deep nausea. Charlie though was ahead of his time when it came to environmental matters but I dont like to be lectured on the subject by him or his brat of a son. Everythings not lost is playing on my phone now so it is all ok. I say this most sincerely sitting in the nice winter sun besides my favourite tree Oh and as I type the favourite part of this song is playing aaah bliss

list the billions that it will cost or better, why not wait to see what the proposals are and then make up your mind?

i'm not looking for a big change - getting rid of a foreign country's monarch from our constitution would do me and just let the governor general act as cheerleader in chief and don't change the way he's appointed.

Why cant one make up their own mind now ( you have ) as opposed to you trying to influence their minds. Mind you it is good that you are as it is really keeping this wonderful thread alive. But by the same token I think you should take a suggestion from one of our highly respected contributors and get close to nature just like I am by sitting in the sun besides my favourite tree. I really think you need to go hug a tree or kiss a plant.
