I'm suggesting how invested our country, the media, the people is in the monarchy as opposed to the idea of a republic. There's a long way to go before it happens, if ever. Unlikely in my lifetime anyway. Were more interested in celebrating the achievements of a foreign monarch than our own country celebrating our own indigenous history.
And it has ever been thus. The old Anglo power elite which was behind the Whitlam coup and which still shifts the levers of power dictates to a large extent the culture of the place and they are quite happy not to completely sever colonial ties. Coupled with that is our authoritarian convict past which manifests in our deference to authority. We reviled the "freedom brigade" during the Pandemic, went off to wars without protest for the most part and, most tellingly, went along with coup that toppled a democratically elected government largely without protest. We are a supine lot in reality but we are led, in the deep state sense, by an authoritarian mind set resistant to change.
Our resolute retention of the monarchy when Canada, India, South Africa and lately the Rastafarians have rejected it is not just ridiculous, it's embarrassing.
