Not trying to trigger anyone here (Andy!) but just thought I would start a thread for any covid updates and the like.

I’ve heard there’s a new strain hitting now. Hope you guys are ok. I’ve had my shots and been boosted plenty plus always sanitise my hands after contacting anything and touch wood, I’ve been ok. Hope you guys stay safe as well.

Oh yeah, how’s Monkey Pox going over there? We’ve had about 340 cases over here in the US but the focus isn’t in the disease itself but more on changing it’s name so not to offend a certain race. Personally, I don’t think it needs any name other than the Pox. That name sounds gross enough as it is!

Would sometime if these other new diseases and infections even rate a mention if there hadn’t been covid? There’s always been something new every few years but now everything is coming to kill us.

Covid is a bastard but not everything is as bad.

I'm going to Japan next week to see my daughter so have been using COVID tests every day. Frigging scared now as I've worked so hard to get the visa and am pretty tired from the hype (current wife hates me going and gets all tense about it, so it's a mixture of me having emotions about the process/experience and then being frustrated that my wife refuses to share the journey with me, or appreciate what I'm doing).

Anyhow I just did one and am still negative. Pretty tired from the week so every little bit of aching/anxiety/exhaustion is compounded by me going 'OMG it's COVID... the whole trip's cancelled!!! This sux so bad!!!'

We're getting the new house renovated (insulation, new roof, electrics/appliances throughout... literally everything we can think of while the roof's being taken off). Tradies arrive at 6am so I'm getting max 5 hours of sleep a night (so sorry if I'm rambling and saying weirder stuff than usual).

It's tough! I don't have energy to talk about COVID but it's here to stay and long COVID's hurting lotsa people.

I'm scared of killing people!!! My cousin's mum just died so he's over from Europe. He's got parkinson's in his 50's, so I get scared for him. Same in Japan, one of my best mates has a wife with parkinson's (later stage). One of my son's best friends has a mum with late-stage, terminal brain cancer... I don't wanna take away a few more months of them being together. People can say it's the flu and shyte but it's terrible. It's a new virus that we're still learning how to treat... not one that's been around for 100 years.

I'm exhausted. As soon as I arrive at my hotel in Japan I'm gonna be so relieved (will probably go to their rooftop baths right away and just chill there for 4-5 hours before smashing down a heap of seafood). If I'm honest, one thing that's gonna help is that they have a culture of wearing masks everywhere. I thought they were insane when I lived there (through bird flu and pig flu BTW), but it all makes sense now.

Heck. I haven't seen my daughter since mid-2019 (I get 1 Skype session a month that's supposed to be an hour but her step-dad sits next to her [gun to her head style to control the conversation] and cuts it off after 10 minutes every time). Getting pretty emotional but the one thing I'm glad of is that we're now at a stage where COVID isn't blocking my yearly physical access. I don't have the brainpower to think about what's going on with cases and policies right now, but I'm gonna enjoy my week of worrying about other stuff followed by returning to our (almost) fully renovated home.

Don’t stress about your travels. If Japan has similar protocols in place like a lot of other countries, people headed there need to test negative before even boarding so you are probably safer on an international flight than anywhere else right now.

Well he’s an idiot then! The vax is never going to stop people getting it. It’s about limiting its effects and thus reducing its opportunity to spread.

No he is a liar along with many other prominent people who all said the same and I do recall many many people on this forum being very critical and abusive towards me for pointing this fact out. A couple have never returned since it has been shown to be demonstrably true.
As for the latter I don’t think that is working too well here. In NZ and all the countries with high vax rates NZ and Australia are now 1st and 2nd in the percentage of infections per person population wise. African nations with the lowest rates of vaccination are the lowest

All pollies are liars but there’s no conspiracy about the whole thing that they are lying about. It’s about managing peoples reactions and they will say things in order to keep the bigger picture in check.

If you think it’s bad now, imagine how bad it really would be if the vax rates were low. Imagine still being locked down if the vax rates were low!

The African nations you speak of show different numbers as it’s not reported the same way over there.

The vax is doing its job as it should and at the moment is the best tool at our disposal until another course of action is found. This is a new disease and as such, getting on top of it is a work in progress.

It’s good debate bud but as I now consider you a good mate, I’m happy to respect your views just as I know your do mine and there are some other things to sort out around here anyway.
