  • Left Darwin yesterday afternoon, sunny and 33c around 1 pm then boarded the plane and then sat on the runway for almost 90 minutes as the departing planes couldn't take off due to a bush fire near the end of the runway, that then made what would be a comfortable 2 hr change over in Brisbane to a 20 min rush for the connecting flight, just happy the bags made it aboard the connecting flight, arrived in Sydney to a lovely 15c around 10pm.
Nice and sunny here now in Sydney but rain predicted around noon so just doing some very essential washing from the trip.

Nothing worse than being stuck on a runway for an extended period of time. Glad you got home safely mate and hope the weather at home is kind to you.

Thanks, yes sitting on the runway while its 33c outside not the best experience but i remember you had some trouble with flights coming back from the US recently. Originally the change over at Brisbane was only going to be 1 hr but Virgin changed the second leg of the flight to a 2 hr change over in Brisbane which i was originally a bit p*ssed off about as Virgin change their schedules just about all the time but in hindsight now it was good as we would have missed the connection, there were people on the flight who were going to Mackay and they were calling the final boarding for that flight as the people were coming off the flight so i doubt whether their bags would have made it.

Yeah we had trouble in LA which compounded on arrival in Sydney with missed connections and amplified wait times. Happens a lot here in the US. Flying here is a dead set nightmare!

Its fitting this is the weather thread as they use any minor weather excuse they can for cancelling flights.

Im not confident our trip home for Xmas will be a smooth one either.

Yes, had an experience like that in 2000 coming back from New York, for some reason Qantas had stopped flying from New York at the time we had booked the trip but then had started up the New York flights again after we had booked. Anyway we had to fly from New York To Los Angeles on American airways to connect with Qantas to Sydney from LA, the transit time between the flights was very minimal and not much room for error and of course when getting out onto the runway in New York there was an announcement that flight was to be delayed due to major storms across the US so we sat and and sat on the runway, and by the time we left there was no way we were going to get the connecting flight. Anyway after we missed the flight , there was another Qantas to flight to Sydney and only had to wait about 2 hours or so for it so it wasn't so bad, the flight that we got on was the one from New York which i saw out on the tarmac when we were leaving New York, so had our travel agent rescheduled our flights before we left for the original trip we could have been at least on the same plane delayed in New York, the upside of it, we had a mate who worked for Qantas and the leg to London and then the leg coming back from LA on Qantas he upgraded us to business class, i thought when we were in LA fixing up the details to get onto the next Sydney flight we may have lost the business class upgrade and while the guy was behind the counter about to print off the updated tickets he says i don't what happened then but your seats just changed from economy to business while he was putting the details, i said oh yes that is right, apparently my mate was working at the time back in Sydney and he could see everything going on on the computer so changed it. Anyway when we got back to Sydney our bags weren't on the flight, but Qantas checked and said they didn't make the flight with all the drama of the connecting flights in LA previously but they could track the bags and they were on the flight that was coming into Sydney the next morning and sure enough they arrived on our door step the next morning.

Google got today's weather right, she said rain to start around noon and at 12.15 down it came, wind and rain.

              • Back to wet, miserable and freezing cold weather here today. Currently still only 5 degrees and it's 2:00pm in the afternoon.

Bloody bell mate. What a mess! Those two late evening Qantas flights out of LA have been a problem for years and Qantas’s is very good at manipulating them. Glad it worked in your favour on this occasion.

That sounds like one of ‘those’ Canberra days that only happens a couple of times a year.

Yeah it was a weird one. It was about 9 degrees at 4:00am in the morning - so that was actually the maximum! It then got colder as the day went on!

Snow flurries reported in Googong. Apparently some residents of tuggers reported some snow but I didn’t see any sadly. Icy cold wind too.

                            • Loving the insulation in our house - for whatever reason our walls have massive cavities, so we ended up getting some great R scores when we insulated them. Locals are saying it's cold but I was just eating icecream while watching a movie with my wife.

Side note (what talking about my enjoyment of the indoor warmth), I bought a cocktail style arcade cabinet from a dude for peanuts yesterday (popped up on Faecbook for almost nothing), grabbed it at lunch (had to) and I've just hooked it all up to a simple but usable state (using the parts I had available). It'll need a bit of work (have ordered the parts to make it good as new) but right now I'm carving up in Pac-Land and nobody's gonna stop me! Amazing how this one just popped up as it's pretty awesome and didn't need much work at all.

By the sounds of it, you can cut down on electricity charges by turning off your fridge and just leave your ice cream outside on the porch!

Love those old school cocktail machines but I’m more into pinnies. Just love em and have passed that onto the kids as well. I think it’s awesome that in todays age, they would rather play a pinball machine than a PlayStation.
