  • Fine dining restaurants

I know we have a thread for what’s on the menu, but I thought I’d start one for the so called “best fine dining restaurants”

The top chefs, location, views and quality, are they worth it?

i was looking at Quay, but there are no bookings left for the end of August, noticed the price was $280 per head with no matched drinks I don’t think.

where have you been, or what have you heard?

ps: now that horrie mentioned “Altitude” within the Shangri-la, your best hotel stays can also be mentioned in this thread

My brother and his wife went to the Quay about a year and a half to two years before covid hit and said the Quay was worth it but there was still a big but ..
Went to Altitude where is some where i had planned to go to for a long while at least for pre dinner drinks but finally a friend had his 70th birthday there for drinks before hand and dinner, amazing view and the food was good to very good but some how it just missed the mark.

While i wouldn't say it is fine dining, the food is very good and the drink prices are very reasonable for where you are and you are on the water with a decent view .

The bit that missed the mark for me was the service in the bar that was separate to the Restaurant, service was excellent in the Restaurant.

This was stunning when we were in Singapore, food was to die for, great views and immaculate service.

Kee in Fukui. New place that doesn't have a web presence.

Home style Korean food served up by a really charismatic owner (trained as a history teacher at Seoul University but has since worked as an air hostess + at a $$$ Tokyo bar... you can tell from her presence that she's an expert at customer service).

Basically you sit down, get served a drink of your choice (I got a jug of Makkoli) and ate some pickles while she cooked up some Korean dishes (plus an experimental curry) beside me.

The place only seats about 5 people so it has a really intimate feel about it (proper home dining style). I stayed until late just chatting with the owner. IMO we don't really have the same concept of restaurant in Australia but it was really awesome. Hard to describe the cooling but it's pretty much the same as a home meal... set menu for the night and low quantities of food with a lot of heart being put into it.

Highly recommended to anybody who finds them-self in the Fukui region

Went to Luke Nguyen’s restaurant at the botanical gardens last week for the wifes birthday, really enjoyed the food and the location.

The lunch included a welcome cocktail each, a bottle of about 11 courses, the main of barramundi fillets was sensational.

Also went to A Tavola over that weekend, I probably expected a little better, the pappardelle ragu was very good, entrees were so so, very very salty S&P calamari.

dessert was the highlight though, the cremino chocolate and the cremino lemon were outstanding, very unassuming, served in a cappuccino cup, you are told to dip your spoon from top to bottom to get a bit of each layer, first spoonful was figuring out what the dessert actually was, then it got better with each additional spoonful, until it was all gone, hard to explain, but a must try.

I forgot to mention Luke Nqyuyen in the Botanic Gardens to you, i went there for a friends birthday just before Christmas in 2020, it was very good but i had to rush back to work late in the afternoon as our manager was sacked earlier in the week and even though it was my weekend off i had to do an order so even though i really enjoyed the lunch there it wasn't an relaxed experience for me, only because of the work situation though. Friends from Brisbane went there roughly about this time last year and loved it, will have to go there again.

Should have also mentioned this one to milanja, Dunbar House, beautiful out on the balcony over looking the water at Watson's Bay.

$280, I think for the location and with a bottle of wine, 2 cocktails and the menu, it was actually really good.
