With respect Eddie it's not a simple question nor a helpful one. First of all HK is China and so was "ruled" by China for millenia. It was forcibly leased to Britain after an illegal invasion after which the most violent superpower of the 19th century occupied it until the 90s. The British used it as a drug distribution base, an alternative income source after slavery was no longer viable. After the American War of Independence, the Dutch or others were the preferred suppliers of humans to the Americas. The English, having reluctantly abandoned the trade, subsequently canonised William Wilberforce as a moral saviour - the old "we were wrong but he showed us the light" bullshit.
The US, of course continued their slave system and still continue to suppress the descendants. These are the leaders of the West that Heckle and Jeckle endlessly hold out as exemplars of virtue.
But I digress.... apart from the HK China rule thing Eddie, I wouldn't live there any time, the place is like a sauna in Summer and it was/is all about money and Capitalism. One could smell the greed in the oppressive Summer air. It is largely the wealthy beneficiaries of colonial rule who incite the rioting (with input from US and British Intelligence agencies) Anyway, ordinary folk can live anywhere - the Greek philosopher Epicurus held that human happiness was achieved with a roof over one's head, amicable companions and good food.
