Paddo needs to understand that not everything is black and white and I don't see everything as black and white. I am no fan of the monarchy or its institution. That does not mean I cannot have great admiration and respect for Queen Elizabeth as a human being, female, mother etc. He has no right to tell me that my opinions are not my own, that I have been brainwashed and I am a sheep. I make up my own mind on matters and reach my own conclusions based on a number of factors. I don't really care for King Charles and even less so for Andrew. But I do (did) admire the Queen and that is MY thoughts and opinion, whether they are right or wrong, it is MY opinion. If only we could all be correct on, and an expert on every issue as Paddo is.

Thanks for the ringing endorsement MR. Did you read (easily googled) Jenny Hocking's Palace letters which convincingly link ol' Betty to the Whitlam coup. At the time Philip called Whitlam a "socialist arsehole". That's why your personal opinions, though no doubt genuine, are irksome for many of us.

The great irony is that Albo has given the workers a holiday to "mourn" and the Tories, those staunch monarchists, are apoplectic about it. What fun to see - Royal fawning costs money guys.

And speaking of money, ol' Kinky Charlie 3 is not replacing mum on the $5 note. We await the coming media storm on that one. Hopefully, the beginning of the end of the entire Tory facade.

I have told you before that I think Whitlam did a lot of good things for this country but he tried to do it all too fast without the necessary funds. I was opposed to his dismissal, though I was too young at the time to comprehend what went on. But later reading has helped me form 'my' opinion on that one. I do find it ironic that Albo has granted us all a public holiday given he is a Repblican I thought.

Anyway, your manner can be quite aggressive when disagreeing with other's opinions. It's ok to disagree but I don't like being called a sheep and without my own ability to think for myself.

Okay, apology but let's just say that you are inclined to put too much faith in our MS media like most people so are you really thinking for yourself? Homer advised Bart never to advance an opinion unless he was sure that 95% agreed with it. People in surveys say that they don't trust the media but the influence is ubiquitous. The fawning media coverage of the Queen's demise (and, gawd help us, we've got a friggin' funeral and then a Coronation yet to come) was pretty much echoed on this thread.

Don't you think that Albo is wedging the establishment and giving it a good arse kick with the holiday? They made hay with Royalty and they torpedoed the Republic referendum. Let 'em now put their money where their mouths are. Us workers need at least a day to grieve. The beauty of it is that they've created the bullshit so they have to wear the out of pocket. Gold!

like comparing footy players from different eras it's hard to compare monarchs from different eras - in particular it's hard to compare monarchs that had real power and constitutional monarchs. whatever qualities elizabeth 2 brought to her job you'd have to say elizabeth 1 faced greater problems and had more responsibility for dealing with those problems.

personally i didn't like elizabeth 1 but you'd have to acknowledge that she played her cards very well, using what personal characteristics she had to forge the role of the modern constitutional monarch that 'stays away from the fray'. it was a role that wasn't subject to the kind of frank scrutiny you'd expect in a democracy, no candid interviews etc

I'd like to think I'm not so easily influenced by the media. Anyone who knows me in real life, knows how cynical / skeptical I am about the media. I hate shows like A Current Affair and 36 Minutes. Those morning shows with Stefanovic and Kochie I avoid at all costs. I don't even put the TV on during week days until dinner time. I hate talk back radio. I was a big fan of Frontline in the 90's as it tore these sorts of shows apart. I hate News Ltd but seriously Fairfax isn't any better these days. Yes we can all be influenced by what we hear and see in the 'news', some moreso than others but you've got to give people some credit. The younger generation get all their 'news' on social media these days - now that's what I call very sad. You'll also be glad to hear that my daughter told me that most of the social media coverage about the Queen involves the use of memes, most of which are not so complimentary.
