  • The Pen, a great place there’s no doubt
    Where the crazy Chook fans all hang out
    They’re a motley mixed crew
    From old stagers to new
    Then there’s those who just whine, whinge and pout.

    • Very good Rooster Mighty. I don't believe that English was your worst subject at school and I'm relieved to see that I don't fit into the "there's those" category. Randy, '08 and Izzy will have their paranoias stoked by it though.

              Yes the assumption is very plain to see but mine is a little more than an assumption, I mean it's plain to see that you weren't so bad at English at school. There are a few things of course, your reasoning has some serious loose ends which I put down to some extent to mental laziness.

              It's so much easier to believe the pretty newsreader on 7,9,10 and the ABC. It's a bit of a drudge then to read and consider the opinions of a highly decorated journalist. The top level awards are bestowed by journalistic peers by the way, unlike the dumb "he's a commie stooge" slur by the numerous hacks in our MSM including my failed former student. Those who cheered on the illegal invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan shouldn't now have any cred.

              Russia is not an autocracy any more than Australia is. Here the power elite of High Court judges, Governors General, Media bosses, Military Generals -all unelected - just sacks a democratically Government at odds with US Security services - some democracy.

                You are bordering on insulting now. I know what I think and I know how I think. This is the last time I will say this. I hate the US. I was opposed to the invasion of Iraq and could not stand George W Bush. Just because I hate the US does not automatically make me a lover of Putin and Russia. Just because I’m opposed to what Putin is doing in Ukraine does not make me a US lover. I do not believe everything that is said in the media. I am quite the opposite, a cynic when it comes to politicians and US / China / Russia foreign policy. I know nothing rarely is ever what it seems. Just because you think you are right does not make you right.

                Also I thought this was supposed to be a poetry thread.

                • And a poetry thread it is though there have been much lamented digressions. Also I thought that MR was a little terse and impatient with Count who merely expressed curiosity on my behalf.

                      Paddo, I did not mean to be tense or impatient with your shadow The Member. I thought it was obvious that I was referring to your assumption that clearly the ‘there’s those’ line didn’t apply to you. How can you be so sure it doesn’t? Maybe I intend for that line to be ambiguous. It’s known for Chookpen members to have meltdowns on the game day threads after a loss isn’t it? And we’re all guilty of a little whinge every now and then.

                      With my English grades, you’re not aware that I expected a lot of myself and was a very dedicated student. It’s possible English was my worst subject because I got above average marks on the others is it not? I was confident in subjects which are fairly black and white such as Science, Maths and Economics. I didn’t say I failed English, I was just average at it. A lot of it came down to a lack of confidence and wanting to give the ‘correct’ answer rather than trying to interpret the text and having enough confidence in my argument to back it up with evidence.

                        Not bad PC but this is not quite original as you have used the Walker talker line which I had already used earlier in this thread Sadly I have not alternative but to fail you due to plagiarism

                        • Very funny Andy. And you're persistent, I like that in a man. Never take a backward step - stauch! Paddo style circa 1960s. I expect more will ensure, you hooked me with the "plagiarism" tag so there's a hot button right there but I'm going to beg you not to go down that path. I'm appealing to the better angels of your nature. Not only are they tedious (though the Ode to MR had merit) they are kind of lowbrow and, as Zac has pointed out, the thread is losing dignity as a result. No offence...you well may be an aspiring writer and I wouldn't want to discourage that.

                          • What about this one to really lower the tone.

                            There was an old woman from Burnie
                            who f….d a young man named Ernie
                            she gave the neighbours a fright
                            as she screamed with delight
                            they could here her all the way from Alderney

                              I hope that you never sweat anything that I say to you I'm joshin' most of the time but sarcasm can be hard to resist and I done bad in that regard. I'm perfectly sure that you were/are all those thing you say, it's plain to anyone who reads your posts - your decency.

                              And you're right, most kids lack confidence, most adults too and, like I said, no one told you it wasn't all about correct answers, it's having a conversation - have you told the kids?

                              I don't know that it was "meltdown" intensity.

                              • Because I love the ocean. I thought I would share a poem about it here I do hope it meets with Zacs and even PCs approval

                                The Ocean

                                BY NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE
                                The Ocean has its silent caves,

                                Deep, quiet, and alone;

                                Though there be fury on the waves,

                                Beneath them there is none.

                                The awful spirits of the deep

                                Hold their communion there;

                                And there are those for whom we weep,

                                The young, the bright, the fair.

                                Calmly the wearied seamen rest

                                Beneath their own blue sea.

                                The ocean solitudes are blest,

                                For there is purity.

                                The earth has guilt, the earth has care,

                                Unquiet are its graves;

                                But peaceful sleep is ever there,

                                Beneath the dark blue waves.
