  • Should the voting age be lowered to 16?

Voting age is currently 18 in Australia - Should it be lowered as it has been in some other Countries

The following are Countries that allow 16 and 17' year old to vote
    • 16 years: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Germany (only in some local elections), Malta, Nicaragua, Scotland
    • 17 years: Indonesia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Timor-Leste

Let the discussion and debate begin

i don't feel strongly either way - to be fair a lot of kids might see it as more of a chore than a privilege

      No.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

I’d rather see the voting age capped first there’s too many old farts making nonsensical decisions about things they no longer understand and won’t have to suffer through.

The Greens and Teals would love the voting age to be dropped to 16. The Federal election before the last my daughters school had a mock in house election and the Greens were the big winners-and the school is right in the middle of Liberal territory.
In the US the extreme right sector of the Republican Party have suggested that the voting age be increased to 21- obviously the age bracket they aren't getting many votes.

Personally i think 18 is the right mark

You’re not wrong. My kids are now 20 and 18. My daughter was involved in something similar to your daughter at her school when in year 11 or 12 and the green vote won easily.

Young people are becoming dumber and dumber. Why would we reduce the voting age? I would like to see us like the USA where voting is not compulsory. I prefer to completely exclude myself from politics. I actually have not voted in 30 years.

And consider the education system and electronic media/big tech platforms that skew young minds and hearts in one general direction.

Maybe raise it to 25 (when cats get some life experience under the belt) and yes, not compulsory.

Absolutely not. 16yr olds just live in the moment and don't look too much to the future.

No Canberra. I think it was around the time of the last election. I agree that 16 is too young. The current age of 18 seems about right to me.
