I feel ya man. I lived on Manhattan for a year - rich man's town. Existed on Pizza and "all you can eat for $10" (back then). I did the Route 66 thing too and after 2 days couldn't face the franchised food outlets and the cardboard pancakes for breakfast. You don't see the extent of corporate food outlets in NYC, SFO or LAX. Lunch and dinner were similarly revolting and it wasn't until Texas that there were independent Tex Mex places and much appreciated edible fare.
My dream is to emigrate to Russia or China and to savour, every day, the wonderful local food of the common folk there.
