    [QUOTE=rented tracksuit; Yes indeed.

    I feel ya man. I lived on Manhattan for a year - rich man's town. Existed on Pizza and "all you can eat for $10" (back then). I did the Route 66 thing too and after 2 days couldn't face the franchised food outlets and the cardboard pancakes for breakfast. You don't see the extent of corporate food outlets in NYC, SFO or LAX. Lunch and dinner were similarly revolting and it wasn't until Texas that there were independent Tex Mex places and much appreciated edible fare.

    My dream is to emigrate to Russia or China and to savour, every day, the wonderful local food of the common folk there.

          A mate's uncle lived the dream in NY for ~40 years. Went there after uni, fell in love with the local music scene (dunno the genre but lotsa electronic music with latin American / African drum beats & blues/house style melodies. I picture he was punching a heap of psychedelics & hitting up Warhol-style loft parties a lot, like that scene in the Midnight Cowboy see example pic below).

          In short he was too much of a dreamer to think about things like visas. As such, he moved into a squat, started pulling coffees/beers at a local cafe and moved into DJ'ing. When his parents found out, they bought him a luxury apartment that was furnished with $$$ gear that (again) wouldn't look outta place at a Warhol-style loft party (example below because I'm making this a visual story).

          Fast-forward to the present day and he returned to Australia briefly after a long absence (though with permanent intent as he shipped a lot of his $$$ furniture / records / DJ kit over. During the process, US immigration checked his visa status and were like 'duuuude... how the fark did you stay here for 40 years without a visa?!?!? You're soooo banned from re-entry!'

          His mental health rapidly declined and he sadly passed away without getting to return to NY. However, he visited me in Japan once, I took him to a similar-themed cafe (see below) and got to see a glimpse of him at his prime. Certainly an eye opening moment as he was one of those characters who would throw a lot of awkward opinions out there (and lived in a complete fantasy zone) but something about it always drew you back to him. To his credit while the guy's actual DJ/mixing skills coulda done with some work, he knew his music and captured moods/moments like no other. The world would be royally shyte without people like that.

          IMO this guy lived the dream. In another life, I think it woulda been pretty cool to be a DJ at a bunch of NY loft parties who listens to a heap of psychedelic music, parties at lofts/cafes every night and lives in a luxury inner-city apartment. However, I think the Japanese version (as well as a similar 'ragtime classics' cafe... both of which are in small towns FWIW) will be the closest I ever get to this lifestyle. Will share a photo of the ragtime classics venue if I can find one in my collection [edit - here we go... side note I'm a pretty shyte pianist but went through a few grades as a kid and help my son out with his piano practice so know a tune or two. About 5 years ago I went to the ragtime cafe and played a couple of tunes as people were arriving for a much better performance while sipping from a house-poured beer mug of whisky... my white privilege earned me an applause so I guess that'll go down as my first and last live piano performance].
