Do you play an instrument? If so, which one? What genre do you play? Are you, or have you been, in a band?

I tinker on the guitar. I have a Maton acoustic, Fender Strat and two Peavey EVH Wolfgangs. Of course I don't do them justice.
I have played in a couple of garage bands at pubs and clubs just for the fun of it, playing mainly 60s 70s and 80s pop/rock.

I've always wanted to play a musical instrument but my vision impairment has always held me back. My son plays piano at an advanced level and my daughter plays guitar. There's quite a lot of musicians on my side of the family - brother, grandparents, cousins etc. My son started teaching me piano a while back but we didn't keep it up as he got too busy with his senior school studies. His piano is still at our place though and I really should go back to practising when I get a chance. When I was young I was pretty good on the old recorder lol! I really do envy you being able to play and be part of a band.

I played the piano for approx 10 years.

Eldest boy plays the guitar and youngest is a drummer.

I really do envy you being able to play and be part of a band.

I wouldn't say I'm any good, or the bands that I was in either. We just had fun. The best gigs were at parties in someones lounge room or backyard. They didn't care if we butchered a song .

Still it would be awesome to just play together and make music. What a great way to spend your time.

Not really but I've very methodically taught myself some jazz/blues tunes on the piano and love to have a blow of a didge whenever there's a good one available.

True story, during high school I was selected to be part of a show that was conducted by Richard Gill through a series of strange events. Basically the professional [who was indigenous] kept turning up drunk & disorderly [kids concert so not cool] and I learned from Charlie McMahon as a kid [family connection] so somehow impressed at a rehearsal that I came in completely unprepared for.

I went to ~2 months worth of pretty intense rehearsals (noting I have no music talent so just keeping up with reading the music & timing things right was pretty hectic). Then, we did a few shows (my parents didn't get tickets to any as they were all sold out) and it was all over.

A good 15 years later I remembered that we did a commercial recording of it and released a properly mastered CD... so I sourced a copy (was pretty tricky) as a memento. Listened to the whole thing and faaaaark... I'd been totally cut out of EVERYTHING and didn't appear in the credits. Contacted the producers to ask why and they were like 'some indigenous guy complained so we had to cut it all out'. Was pretty devo, though I respect that in hindsight having me playing the didge woulda offended people. Still. Makes me kinda sad as I put a lot of effort into it and gave up a lot of stuff for it (I was in year 12 and had lotsa assignments/exams that I had to skimp on as I'd made the commitment to the orchestra).

You must have been ok on the ivories Izzy. You've got one on me, I failed dismally in my attempt to have a blow on the didgeridoo. What was the name of the show?

Just resurrecting this thread as I’ve been learning the piano again courtesy of my son. Not sure I’ll progress too far lol but it’s been fun and frustrating at the same time.

Was in a a few Different Cover Bands playing the Classics . Pistols , Clash . Damned . Sham69, UK Subs , Stooges , Ramones , Stiff Little Fingers. Cockney Rejects , Exploited , Black Flag , the odd Jam song and even a few New York Dolls songs

That's pretty awesome as you get to listen to a lot of great music without having to play it

I've tried but am simply no good at music. I spend weeks teaching myself jazz tunes (poorly) then turn on a quality recording while sipping a limoncello and am like 'why did I put myself through that when I can just listen to jazz and drink limoncello?'

Guitar for me too Big Dog. Have a Maton Acoustic as well, one of the Road Series versions. Haven't played in bands myself, but my brother and nephew are accomplished musos who do. I tend to play and learn songs I like, mainly from Alt-country or Americana genres. Dabble with some writing and seeing how it sounds. Spend too much time noodling and just playing what I already know, like most lazy casual guitarists.

Trying to force myself to learn some blues and guitar classics...Smoke, Sweet Home and Hotel Cali etc. Then if I get asked to play something at a bash it might do down better! My brother says I should go to an open mike event and have a go, but I fear I may have missed the boat. There could be novelty value in an old bugger having a crack

Question aside...what strings you using for your Maton? I'd been using their standard Elixirs but tried Daddario last time for a change. Happier with them, feel smoother and cleaner and less breaking in.
