He has come out and said today that it should have been a Penalty Try in Origin 2...

However, what he doesn't understand is that Steven Clark assessed it and made the right call in the end because like Tony Archer and Ben Cummins he got a feel for the game and made the right call to just give it a penalty and let the teams sort it out...

I actually believe what Steven Clark did was the best piece of Officiating all year from the NRL Referee's....

To call a black and white decision in Origin just comes ot show that Bill Harrigan is really the problem not the Referee's, if he allows more of his referee's to get a feel for a teams Momentum and allow them to play instead of being so black and white out there byt making sure the Referee's Pressence is felt by all then this Grand Final this year is going to be worse than the 99 Grand Final...

If referee's got a feel for our last 4 games then we would be in the top 8 at this present time...

Maybe Steven Clark should be the New Referee's Boss as that was a decision from an individual who knows and accepts what the game is about...

I don't understand your post. My feelings are these:

1. Steven Clark is and always has been a cheating knob who has very poor judgement. My guinea pig would do a better job than him.

2. The "feel" of that incident was Cronk deliberately held back a player about to ground the ball for a try.

3. It should have been a penalty try AND 10 in the bin for Cronk.

4. There was nothing wrong with the 1999 GF. St George lost because "the man" hogged the ball and bombed a certain try that would have put them out of reach. And Ainscough took a player's head off who was about to score. A no-brainer penalty try.

5. I think you are confusing the 1999 GF with the 2010 GF, which was won by the referees.

Tim Mander was on the Game Plan last night and said he would have given "no try" but when he heard that Hollywood had said he would have given it, qualified that by saying it was also 'a matter of individual opinion'.

And here was I thinking they were meant to ref by the rule book as it's written.

It's when 'individual opinion' overrides the rules of the game that the issues arise. And unfortunately that's what's happening this year - the rules are taking a backseat to individuals' opinions.

Yeh i thought it was the right decision, I don't think you give away a penalty try unless you are 100% certain the player was going to score. There were still too many variables in this situation (Slater coming across, toddy could of spilled the ball). I think they made the correct call

The penalty try is a matter of interpretation of the degree of doubt - whether or not Carney would've gotten there before Slater had he not been impinged and thus would've scored the try

in my opinion through my interpretation, it should've been a penalty try. I have no doubt in my mind that Carney would've gotten there before Slater had Cronk not interfered. Look at it this way. Carney got there at the same time as Slater with Cronk on his back. If Cronk hadn't been pulling him back, id say with 95% confidence that Carney scores

Gould and Wally Lewis a passionate QLD'er himself agreed that it could've been a penalty try - their reasoning being that Carney's position in relation to Slater would've changed had he not been impinged, thus removing any potential doubt because he would've gotten their easily before slater without impingement.

Interpretations lead to inconsistencies and that's been the issue with Harrigan all along. He's taken the refs from enforcing the rules to interpreting them and then blames them for when they get their interpretation wrong.

It's bloody stupid, why can't the ARLC see that?
