FORMER South Sydney Rabbitohs captain Craig Field has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty of manslaughter in the fatal one punch death of north coast cattle farmer Kelvin Kane.

Field – who celebrated his 42nd birthday in a correctional centre last week – looked dejected as the sentence was read out at the Lismore court complex this afternoon. His family broke down when the sentence was read out.

Justice Elizabeth Fullerton said Field would serve a non parole sentence of 7 years and six months for his role in the death of Mr Kane, who was fatally punched during a car park brawl at the Kingscliff Hotel on July 15, 2012.

Field lodged a last-minute reference from media heavyweight Alan Jones – a former mentor of his at the Rabbitohs who described him as “enthusiastic, passionate and decent”.

Justice Fullerton said the community demanded a “general deterrence” for “unprovoked, uncontrollable, lethal violence”

After a 29-month wait, the Kane family finally had their justice as Field slumped in the dock.

Part of me wants to say great he will have to do time cos he has done the crime. Part of me wants to say fark me bro' and almost want to cry as two families lives have been destroyed by a stupid act of violence fueled by grog!

There are no winners when thugs decide violence is the only option....

Well said, alcohol and the actions associated with it ruin many lives.

Field was indeed an Easts supporter and former ball boy. He was definitely ball boy during the 1987 season, when the Roosters made the prelim final before losing to Canberra. I once read a story about him playing for Souths reserves against Newcastle in 1991 and tackling Gary Wurth, the former Roosters and Newcastle fullback who then yelled out "the ball boy has got me!".

Field could have been an outstanding footballer, and played well in some very ordinary Souths' teams between 1993 and 1996. Unfortunately he never truly reached his potential, and this lack of discipline followed him off the field.
