Court told of Field's recruit bid

South Sydney's former reputation as a home for troubled souls might have made a comeback had Craig Field had his way. According to remarkable court evidence, a teenager allegedly coerced by the former halfback into staging an armed robbery told a police officer shortly after his arrest that Field had promised to get him a spot playing with the Rabbitohs if he committed the robbery. Wagga's Daily Advertiser reported that the allegation by the juvenile of Field's involvement in the robbery was made to Constable Amanda Deissel at Wagga police station soon after his arrest for the robbery of the Sportsmen's Hotel on February 18, 2007. The evidence was submitted by Wagga police officer Senior Constable Simon Carberry at Wagga District Court on Wednesday, the second day of Field's trial. The 36-year-old Field has denied a charge of recruiting a child to commit a crime and theft of cash from his employer. On Tuesday, the jury heard a replay of a dramatic triple-0 call in which the operator was told: "It's Craig Field at the Sportsmen's Hotel mate. I'm the manager … I've just been held up." Field, the current coach of Wagga Brothers RLFC, is accused of staging the armed robbery - in which he was the alleged victim - with a 17-year-old who agreed to hold him up.
