Unfortunately it's short term pain for long term gain. The best thing to come out of this deal is the fact that no longer is the game held to ransom by Nine and Fox by them having first and last bids. Personally I think that's the real benefit the ARL Commission delivered under this deal.

Next time round all the bidders are on equal footing. And hopefully 9 are outbid fair and square.

So much for Gyngell being a true league fan. This bloke doesn't give a shyte about the game other than the money and ratings it brings to his TV network. The way that he duds the fans with the delayed coverage on FTA is disgraceful. Yes he's paying big money for the rights so but so do the blokes at 7 for the AFL and they at least give a damn about the AFL and have it live on one of their channels. That's what fans are forgetting. The last deal was $550 million over 6 years, that has more than doubled now. With News owning half the game and the puppet at the helm the game was getting screwed, not anymore.

I was hoping 9 would be gone and there would more games on free to air but you can't get everything. Also as part of the deal News have lost the first and last option on all future rights. Those carnts hold on the game is all but gone.

The coverage could be better but I'm not complaining the game is in a much better shape than 18 months ago.

This is essentially what the broader game and the commission should be so proud about. Our war chest has more than doubled. At this stage of the game's development a large injection of money is exactly what some of the struggling clubs and grass roots needs. Yes, it is exactly that - short term pain for long term gain. Of course, there are going to be steady increases and this could rise to as high as anything in 4-5 years time. The code is in a good position now irregardless of how TV coverage is virtually the same. Criticize it all you want, but cash is so so important right now

Roy masters article this morning suggests ten was the best deal for the fans with 4 FTA games a week for 800m but no e and fox came back higher with their last rights. This would indicate that in 5 years time when everyone bids blind the sky is the limit pricewise

I saw the announcement and a reporter asked whether that was going to happen and Gyngell said it would not happen because 2 games simulcast live would split the ratings up and that would be no good for advertisers.

Advertise it as the fans choice, 2 live Friday night games running back to back, still cater for QLD, on the dedicated RL channel.

Well doubt they'd go with those times because the 6.00pm would be a clash with their main news bulletin on Ch9 and we all know they would never move the 6 o'clock news.
If you made it 6.30 and 8.30, the first time would be better than the 6pm time, but would you start getting into the argument that the second game is on to late ?

I like your idea about consecutive live games on GEM and 9, but always going to find it difficult to get a consensus on the ideal times to play them.
