PROMISING young footballer Ben Tupou has had his Newcastle Knights contract torn up after being charged with assaulting a teenage girl.
But if he is not convicted of the charge, the door remains open for him to rejoin the National Rugby League club.
The 19-year-old is yet to face court over the alleged assault at a Maryland address in the early hours of July 25.
He presented himself to Newcastle police station on the day of the alleged assault and was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Tupou, one of four footballing brothers and the younger sibling of Cronulla, NSW and Australian representative Anthony Tupou, has been given police bail and will make his first appearance in Newcastle Local Court on September 1.
Knights chief executive Steve Burraston said the club was informed by police the day after the alleged incident, before calling Tupou in for a disciplinary hearing.
Mr Burraston said Tupou and his management indicated they would fight the charge.
