    common sense.
a good shoulder charge is rarely ever pulled off. too often you'll get a bigger guy targeting a smaller guy (pritchard vs simmons) and the smaller guy will get knocked out cold.
the effects of concussion can be horrific later on in life, just look at mohhamed ali (apologies for spelling).
i reckon its a good move to ban the shoulder charge. that 3 second rush of blood is could be what cuts off 5 years of someone else's life.

      What a farrken joke.

In other news, the players will be wearing skirts instead of footy shorts from 2013 and they all have to have permission slips signed by their mum before round 1.

It's not banned. It's banned until next month in which they will create rules for the shoulder charge, and since there's no footy in that time period, it doesn't matter.

add another couple of players and kick for goal all game, then hey we can can be just like union. It stinks. make a player accountable for when it goes wrong, then they will naturally cut much of it out of the game. 5 to go and you need a big play in defence, what happens now? Ahh thats right you cant strip the ball either.

In a perfect world i'd agree with you mate..

I love me a good shoulder charge..

But it's what it does to the players long term that is the worry..

The NFL is getting extremely serious about the issue..

For me, the shoulder charge is a tackle that has always been part of Rugby League. The problem with this type of tackle arises when a defender attempts one from front on, as in the case of Ingliss and the Pritchard tackles.

There should be a rule that makes this type of tackle legal only from a side angle. When we were taught to play the game, it was used to knock someone off balance from the side when there wasn't time to set yourself for a proper tackle or to knock a bigger player off balnce and slow him down until help arrived.

Attempting a shoulder charge front on is fraught with danger as witnessed over the last couple of years.

I'm picking up what you're putting down HIGs, but it's just a knee jerk reaction imo.

For every 1 person that gets knocked out from a shoulder charge gone wrong, there's probably 10 blokes who get cleaned up by putting their head in the wrong position whilst attempting a tackle.

Are we going to stop tackling all together soon mate?

There are far more dangerous things in rugby league than shoulder charges.

But hey, you know the gist, imo of course.

Yep as i said mate,i love a good shoulder charge..

In the 38 years i've been old enough to watch footy it's been one of my favourite parts of the game..

But as Dylan sang "The times they are a changin'"..

The ARLC are petrified of getting sued by an ex-players victim after they go loco..

It's players going full retard 5 years after they retire that is the worry..

I will miss it,but i can see where there are coming from..

Yeah, ask Mini. The amount of force used could get you penalised also!

The issue here is not the shoulder charge, it's contact with the head.

Unfortunately for quite some time now the judiciary & referees have ignored contact with the head unless it was from a swinging arm or a spear tackle. Case in point our 2010 semi final and the famous Dwyer shoulder charge.

The disincentive of bans for players who make contact with the head of an opposition player with their shoulder only started to be continuously cited by the judiciary this year. Even then the charges and punishments handed down were inconsistent and the gradings were never explained well. This feels like an overreaction to an issue whilst serious falls under the category of being a rare outcome from a shoulder charge.

I liken it to banning Australians from drinking alcohol because a minority just can't handle it, it's not the answer.

Contact with the head has always been illegal, just enforce it and clubs, players & coaches will adapt.

We've got to this stage due to administrative incompetence and now we as the fans pay for it by having one of the greatest parts of Rugby League outlawed. Not a good day in Rugby League history.

Spot on. Interestingly, every picture and video accompanying stories on this decision has featured a shoulder charge that was already illegal under existing rules.
