The only person who knows what these guys are on is the guy who manages the spreadsheet in the office. Not because of the secrecy but mainly due to the incentives, top ups and discounts that are available. . Very few people know the full story until 31 October of each year as a result. So the contract dollars don't necessarily reflect the actual earnings

I know some of those numbers aren't quite right, but they may very well be contract dollars. Those that do have the ability to earn extras through rep footy, 3rd party deals etc have contracts that reflect their ability to do this but have minimums built into their contract, some of the players are on minimums to safeguard against injuries etc. That is ... someone (like a marquee or rep player) may have a minimum, be on a $150k contract but with extras could earn $500k, but the club underwrites up to $350k. Another player who doesn't have the same opportunities may have a flat contract dollar amount, come hell or high water.

Management of the salary cap has become quite a sophisticated and scientific process. Doing the sums isn't easy.

Are we under or over the cap, who knows ... unless they get caught you would assume they are. If your club isn't seeking to gain whatever advantage possible on or off the field then enjoy having each September off.

Regardless, I know the squealing will reach fever pitch before round 1 next year. Buckle in.

I will never criticize your club, or Melba for that matter, over the cap issue. Firstly my club has copped more than it's fair share of unwarranted criticism, especially in certain sections of the media. And secondly we have a Teflon team in Brissy that IMO has NEVER been near the salary cap, EVER.

The playing field is that far askew it's laughable.

The sooner the sham that is the salary cap is done away with the better IMO.

I agree with you about the cap, I don't think it has produced the outcomes the NRL expected. The strong clubs are lo and behold still the strong clubs. Also, clubs are finding other ways of differentiating themselves through coaches, systems and I believe, the SBW scenario will be the first of many to come.

Wouldn't mind a long discourse on it as it really riles me, but I'm at work and I need to maintain our return on shareholder capital.

Minimum contracts are highly unlikely for marquee players,and if any players are signed up this way,their earnings for any one year is then calculated as their cap worth for the following year [refer Mullins 2002 and why we couldnt keep him for 03]

Agree on the one year deals, but some players will be able to command them, and attractive to a club that wants to top up their roster if they have a genuine shot at the title.

It's more a guaranteed minimum as opposed to a minimum contract. In other words, they're not signing for $60k (ala Gasnier post-rugby), their contracts have a guaranteed minimum amount, say $350k. The club says we'll pay you $180k, plus you'll earn $70k from endorsements or 3rd party arrangements. This counteracts, the scenario where the player is injured or if the club doesn't secure the 3rd party deal or endorsements ... again ... Gasnier pre-rugby.

Exactly, and that's why it's in the interest of both parties for the club to underwrite the potential short fall if they do fall through.

Imadog you are 100% right I have NFI how much anyone is on but I did start it with IMO. I wasnt trying to say I know how much these guys get paid it was more along the lines of that I feel they could afford Thurston with there current squad on a 7 million dollar salary cap.

a one year contract allows a player to get a nice big win at the races during the year? when braith came to our club he was enticed with a big brown paper bag during a round of golf? hidsight dictates it should have either been empty or full of old maccas c crap? sadly it was cash!
