who do you consider to be the freaks of modern league?

Your reason for not rating Smith sort of applies to %95 of first graders today. Plenty of the modern era players, who are considered in the top echelon of players, would have struggled with playing in the 70's. it was more vicious back then. The same can be applied to that eras top players. How would they have copped with the pace of today's game and the strength of the modern era players.

I agree MD, a freak can only be described by how much he means to his team and whether his presences is vital for his team winning or losing. JT and Smith fit this description, yes, Smith has more quality around him than JT, I actually feel sorry for JT because he has very little quality amongst his backs. Inglis would Make a difference if removed from South's lineup but I've seen Nathan Merritt do incredible things from fullback. Barba will be found out this season, Slater wouldn't be as good as he is without Cronk and Smith. As for Hayne, please, he is a sook and a spoilt brat and isn't half the player of Inglis or Slater.

Cameron Smith can not. He can control a game but is not that impressive outside of his enforced structure.
Cronk has more ability to adapt than Smith does but Slater is the key, Melbourne's record without him is much worse than with him. He is also the backline coach, he is the best of both worlds.

Diamond's courage was freakish. I was thinking of this last night when Barba attempted a half-arsed strip instead of putting his body on the line for one of Manly's tries. It is the exact same thing Mini has been doing his whole career.

I wouldn't call Smiff a freakish player as such but IMO he is tough enough to handle any era, he's a pure footballer.

I'm sure Melba lost 4-5 games last year when Smiff was injured??? And there's always the 40-0 GF without him.
