  • Canterbury Bulldogs appoint Raelene Castle as their new CEO

    Hey guys,

What is everyones thoughts on Canterbury Bulldogs appoint Raelene Castle as their new CEO, replacing Todd Greenberg

IMHO - I think its a bold move from the Bulldogs but having said that I also think that it is a great move by them as well.

CANTERBURY have broken new ground in giving a woman a key role in the running of an NRL club, appointing New Zealander Raelene Castle as their new chief executive.

The appointment of Castle, chief executive of Netball New Zealand, is expcted to be announced in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon.

No woman has been an NRL club chief executive, although Liz Dawson, another Kiwi, was chief executive of the Adelaide Rams during the 1997 Super League season.

While the former NRL board and the ARL Commission have had female directors, it's the sort of appointment which rugby league been accused of in shying away from in terms of being an inclusive sport.

Netball's increasing popularity in New Zealand has occurred on Castle's watch as she has headed up NNZ since 2007.

Castle, who flew into Sydney today ahead of the announcement, has a background in sports event and corporate management and also rugby league ties, as her father Bruce captained New Zealand in one Test in the 1960s.

She will replace Todd Greenberg, who takes a post in July as the NRL's No.2 executive.

If it is the lady whose picture I saw in the paper a couple of days ago I did think, " surely she ain't fairdinkum about that fringe". If she gets the job she can't bring that with her!

Reminds of when I was 5 and mum used to use a bowl to do my hair . Love my mum :-!:-!

Judging by her pedigree Raelene will fit into The Kennel culture superbly .

A really interesting dimension indeed as far as footballers being told by a woman what/how things need to be done. No more blokey vibe or culture (Peter Moore would be rolling in his grave), no more mad monday shenanigans.
IMO, this appointment might unsettle & piss some players off after a while.

If you're out there imadog we'd be interested in your thoughts & the thoughts of Dogs officials.

Hey mate, I think you may have me confused with someone else (imadog?) anyways...

Look I can agree with some points but, Castle was also heavily involved in the establishment and delivery of the ANZ Championship trans-Tasman netball competition and lead the negotiations in securing the multi-million dollar naming rights sponsorship.
Telecom, Fuji Xerox and Bank of New Zealand are amongst the leading corporate organizations Castle has served in marketing and business leadership roles.

She brings a lot of experience. That's my thoughts.

As for the players, the players don't get told what to do its the Coach and I'm sure their structure will be the same as it was when Todd Greenberg was at the helm.

CEO - to manage the business side
Coach - to manage the football

        Simple.

It's all about value for money.

Not only was she appointed CEO, with a head like that they've also hired her as a mascot.

Its a very 'Greenberg' type of move by the Bulldogs.
I would hate to hear all the sexist remarks about her getting the job so she can wash the jersey, etc. That would be too much.

Don't forget the canteen. That always gets trotted out during Women In League round..certain commentators from Channel 9 are champions at thinking this is all women can do..Seriously, if this new CEO was a man, would you all be commenting on her hair or dress sense?

If she was the best person for the job, good luck to her. Given their history though, I find it hard to believe her sex didn't come into their decision making process.

Running Netball NZ would not be an easy task (I am being serious) and I think she would know RL a little as her father captained NZ
