Video: the worst (and funniest) decision ever made by a rugby league official
AND Geoff Toovey thought he had something to blow up about.
In a season where NRL referees have often been brought into the spotlight for the wrong reasons, a Queensland Cup official has made a mistake that must surely take the cake.
On Sunday afternoon, in a match between Easts Tigers and Souths Logan Magpies, a line drop out bounced over the sideline, next to touch judge Marcus Schooth, before a Magpies player took three steps over the sideline to bat the ball back into play.
In a stunning decision, Schooth allows play to go on.
Rugby league legend and Easts Tigers chief executive Des Morris has watched plenty of footy in his time, but admitted he'd rarely seen a mistake so "blatant".
At the time, Morris was not amused as his side was taking a hiding in the penalty count and was only leading 6-0 before the decision.
But with the final score going 50-6 to Easts, he could see the humour in what happened but was at a loss to work out how Schooth could not have seen that the ball was out.
"I think every club thinks that the refs are against them but this is going to an extreme," he laughed.
Asked if he had ever seen a call like that before Morris said, "I don't think so, nothing as blatant as that".
"I don't know what happened and neither does he.
"It's probably hasn't done his chances of running the line in the finals much good, but these things happen."
