At a football club, there’s a holy trinity – the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don’t come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques.

here is the article, just to clarify, he is not taking over Gallop's job, they want howard as the head of an independant commission into the structure of Rugby League in Australia.
Former Prime minister John Howard asked to join NRL as chairman
By Phil Rothfield
October 07, 2009 .Former prime minister John Howard has been secretly approached by league officials to become the game's most powerful figure.
As part of a radical blueprint to overhaul the current structure of the game, Mr Howard has been asked to be inaugural chairman of an independent commission to run the NRL.
Mr Howard, 70, was sounded out recently by Gold Coast Titans boss Michael Searle, who is leading an NRL club committee to establish the commission with eight directors.
Mr Howard, a league supporter and St George-Illawarra fanatic, is currently in the US.
A spokesman told The Daily Telegraph newspaper on Tuesday night: "Mr Howard has no comment to make other than to say that he has always been interested in rugby league and has the best interests of the game at heart."
It is understood Mr Searle is pushing for the former prime minister because he is seen as a distinguished, statesman-like figure with no ties to any faction.
He is also a figurehead many believe would be the unifying force the game needs and the man to help ward off the AFL's multi-million-dollar assault on league's heartland in Sydney's west.
It is believed the push for Mr Howard will meet with some opposition because some influential figures believe the retired PM may be too old for the role.
Mr Howard would be the only appointee to the board; the rest would be nominated and go through an election process among club and state delegates.
Mr Howard has a strong knowledge of league and is not allied with either co-owners News Ltd or the Australian Rugby League, neither of which would be represented on the commission.
The commission is being mooted to resolve the game's complicated ownership issues and the fractious set-up between the NRL, the ARL, the NSWRL, the Country Rugby League and the Queensland Rugby League.
It is proposed all would merge and operate under the Howard-led independent commission, identical to the AFL's senior management structure.
Many senior figures at club level believe the game's development has been stymied by the unwieldy structure and "blazer brigade" culture created by too many controlling bodies.
Now, with the game at a crossroad ahead of crucial upcoming TV rights negotiations and ambitious expansion plans into the Central Coast and southeast Queensland, they want a commission to unify the code.
NRL chief executive David Gallop lent his support to approaching Mr Howard on Tuesday night.
"I was made aware of it in some discussions I had recently," Mr Gallop said.
"I'll just say this: to have someone of his high profile and passion involved in the game would be handy.
"I get briefed from time to time on the proposals for the commission but it is something being driven by the clubs and I haven't been involved in any discussion with John Howard."
Mr Gallop would remain as the NRL chief executive and still wield the day-to-day power.

Agree with this move 100% - no matter what anyone says, Howard knows efficiency - something our current game struggles with due to all the NSWRL's, QRL's, CRL's ARL's etc etc etc that burn money with bureaucratic bullshit.
I think the Roosters need Footychoices - behave or piss off !!!
How's Big Red treating them Unions these days? LOL. She makes Workchoices loo like a picnic.
I agree with elo a couple of posts up. Howard knows efficiency, and he has a genuine love of the sport. I think in an independant role, he could do a good job, not withstanding the connections he has, he could really bring something good to the game. The only reservation i have, is his age. 70 aint that young, although if the position had a mandated term of say 2 or 3 years, then he'd have to move on in the near future anyway.
Alcohol never solved any life problems.....then again neither did milk.
Who else will be on the commission? 8 people to "run the game"...
- John Howard
- Bob Hawke
(get 2 opposing pollies... not Keating because he's crap with sports)
- Brad Fittler
- Hazem El Masri
(2 ex players from opposing teams... gotta have that 1 guy from an ethnic background too)
- Super Mario
- New Rooster Man
(2 fans from opposing forums)
- Sol Trujillo
- Tim Johnston
(2 crooked ex-bosses who screwed over the people)
I jest... that would suck... still, any better suggestions?
So, if the Dragqueens club or one of their players bring the game into disrepute for an off-field indiscretion, will Chairman Howard of the Tribunal act with or without prejudice????
The head honcho MUST be someone without any current or previous affiliations!!!
The Dragqueens have always had people in high places or pollies involved with their club i.e Lockwood and McLellan.

Big Red will make a great Prime Minister Melon I keep telling you.....
I agree with Howard being a good choice, as long as there is no players overboard scandal
Howard has announced that the 2010 NRL player induction will be held on Christmas island.
The players will board the norwegian Freighter the "Tampa" and taken to the island for processing. If their application is approved, they will be able to continue to australia and play in the NRL, those whos applications are not approved will be returned to their country of origin.

Big red is hurting your Union mates. But whilst were at it, why dont we ressurect the Ruddster's AWB lies as well. Then we can sell the pair of fables as a Grand final memorial keepsake? The PM's Fairy Tale.
Terms and Conditons Apply: Lies as told by the PM do not come with a money back apology. Will exchange for carbon credits.
