Promoting the games image is one thing but speaking to that bunch of carnts tarnishes the game in every article they spew forth.

Quite simply - if the clubs and players don't want to make the effort to get the game out there to more people then they needn't complain when the game stagnates and their wages do as well.

And when the next TV rights deal is not as generous as this one because the networks are sick of the lack of access, then don't whing about that either.

It's a two way street guys - if the game wants positive coverage, it needs to give our positive vibes. The more difficult the players are to access, the less coverage it gets.

Rugby league is competing in a tough industry to win the publics' hearts and minds. AFL and soccer are quite happy to take advantage of any benefits league gives them.

Look at how often Buddy Franklin has his ugly mug on TV - and don't tell me enjoys it either. He'd rather not do it but knows it's part of the job. And that's where AFL has it all over NRL, making their players sell the game.

Your dead right on the lack of promo[ probably why there were a lot of empty seats?] , fox did have a preseason thing in the lead up on Wednesday nights on all teams preseasons. I dunno NC the way I took the article and the original post was Khunt had a tear up cos neither $BW or Spam would do an interview with their paper.

Both those blokes have done interviews with Gus in the past. I don't know what they did or didn't do before round 1, I don't watch commercial TV or read the rag.

I think you will find most players shun from interviews before round 1. Really what can they say that hasn't been said??? We have trained hard we are ready.

I notice some teams, our team especially, do interviews at 1/2 time. That's massively intrusive. But it's also showing a decent media outlet, being Ch 9 in this case, will be able to negotiate such a request cos players and clubs realise they aren't going to be stitched up.

It's all about News LTD. They wrote the article in question. They are the ones making the claims. And they are the ones who bought the two players in question into the argument.

If you have a problem with the pre-season promotion maybe it's with the NRL??? Or the individual clubs??? Or the combined media???

Personally I didn't notice a lack of promotion. They had the standard ad. They had the standard footy shows etc. They even added the 9s this year which was a resounding success and a massive promotion for our game.

I'm unsure as to what else should've/could've been done and by whom???

I reckon Paul Kent made a very valid point in that the players themselves did little (all of them) to promote the start of the season to encourage footy fans to attend games, let alone entice new followers to experience a game of footy live. Hopefully over the season this improves.

A few things.

I admitt freely I hate NewsFilth.

I have no real love for Fairfax, except Russell, but I believe they are slightly better of a bad bunch. They have less of an agenda due to the fact they have not owned our game. Therefore I use them to gain my news and info from.

Gus the commentator I don't give a rats about. Gus the journo I don't dislike but don't always agree with. Gus the RL man I respect.

I disagree about Khunt. I only see agenda. If he wasn't whinging about crowds he'd be whinging about something RL. If he couldn't find anything he'd make something up. That's the way NewsFilth do business. I know this cos in the industry they have zero respect. That's from other journos, let alone players and officials from RL.

I see it as the NRLs job to promote the game. They use the media and players to do this. Players are there to entertain us on the field. Not to be at the beck and call of journos who want to sell papers. Selling papers is a journos job.

That's how I see the point in question.

It is a valid point, but not really that important in the scheme of things.
The game has been taken away from the fans, by money ruling the roost, by going to the big useless stadiums, by stupid rule changes, by the cost of going to the game for a family, the kids not having their players cards and Ch9 having too much to say in the running of the game.

Tradition has been thrown out the window and that is what RL is about.
