      As a rugby player, especially a forward, putting my head over countless rucks each game means taking lots of blows to the head. This happens to everyone.

      I'm surprised there are only a handful (Thurston, Ballin, Soward) that wear headgears.

      Seems to me that headgear is helpful when head hits the ground, especially if falling backwards.

        Shattering and gut wrenching news, my heart sank once I found out....I haven't read the thread as I am on holidays.....but this is gut wrenching news hence the need to post. I remember the day clearly when John Farragher was also tragically injured for life when a scrum collapsed.

        I am sure the Rugby League Community and Men in League will get behind young Alex, his family and also the Melbourne Storm players who would be affected. In particular, young Jordan McLean who appears to be a lovely young person.

        I hope Alex is able to use his undoubted strength and resilience to do great things in the community which I am sure he will. However, it is tragic news for a young man who has everything ahead of him to be told he can no longer walk again and it definitely makes the problems for most of us pale into insignificance.

          mouth guards do more to help prevent concussion than head gear. head gear protects ears from being torn, cushons head to head/knee /elbow style clashes. I does give jnrs a bit more confidence playing with the gear on.

              If James Charles, now laid up in hospital in Newcastle with four fractured vertebrae, four fractured ribs, internal bleeding and a haematoma, had become a paraplegic or quadriplegic...he would've received no financial payout much at all from "football's insurance".
              That's bad...very very bad.

                That said it is a good thing IMO that juniors up to about 15 wear headgear.

                You would be surprised the impact a thin bit of material can have.

                Headgears don't just stop head cuts etc, they have a dramatic effect on lowering the number of concussions caused by head knocks.

                I am all for promoting the use of head gears, not just up to 15 years of age, but right through your senior career as well. Thurston is an ambassador for it.

                  2GB just announced ...5.40 am today, that Alex has some movement in his right arm.

                  If they can possibly get his right arm working, or his hand...at least then he'll be able to operate an electric wheelchair?

                    I think you will find that's wrong.

                      Event 1 only, Death benefit is limited to $10,000 for Insured Persons under 18
                      years old

                      $130,000 (Permanent Paraplegia/Quadriplegia)

                      Yes, what I call "no financial payout much"...in today's money/today's world.

                      Might I suggest they increase that particular death benefit to at least $500,000 ...and the paraplegia/quadriplegia benefit amount to $3m.

                      The NRL reportedly has $200m cash in the bank...it should grant Alex McKinnon $3m of it, held in trust by reputable people...and immediately negotiate new mandatory insurance policies for all its players, with benefit amounts that reflect today's/the future's costs.
                      ...multi-million dollar benefits for paraplegia and quadriplegia.

                      Anything less than that is, well, not a good look at best.

                        The tackle was just replayed on ch9's afternoon news...

                        So, tell me how it's not that;
                        he was lifted off the ground, past the horizontal, and driven into the ground head first by 3 Storm players...at about a 45 degree angle?

                        Update;

                        https://au.sports.yahoo.com/league/n...ngerous-throw/

                        But the panel took less than 10 minutes to find McLean guilty.

                        NRL counsel Peter Kite, representing the prosecution, successfully contended that while the Bromwich brothers undoubtedly contributed to the tackle gone wrong, "substantial responsibility for the lift was borne by player McLean".

                        Before a packed media contingent listening to the evidence, judiciary chairman Paul Conlon SC reminded all parties that a dangerous throw was "lifting a player into a dangerous position and placing them at risk of suffering injury".

                        #####

                        Now the NRL must ban all lifting tackles...and limit all tackles to only two players.
                        Or risk more serious injuries like this.

                            Alex has announced his engagement to his girlfriend and intends walking her back down the aisle after their wedding. If that is not romantic, I don't know what is. I sincerely hope their dreams come true now.
