While officials squabble and threaten to divide rugby league, the fans have delivered an early Christmas present: TV ratings have eclipsed AFL nationally for the first time. This year, rugby league had an aggregate audience of 128.5 million compared with AFL's 124.3 million....

What we need to remember is that most AFL fans go to the games rather than watch on television.

You see there's the problem - AFL is better at the ground and not so good on the box whereas NRL doesn't suffer (benefit from?) quite the same dynamic. Additionally, gAyFL's importance in Victoria nears the fervency of a religion whereas Sydney-siders aren't so one-eyed about the NRL. NRL will never reach the same levels of at-ground participation that the gAyFL receives in Victoria.

AFL is only better at the ground if you're an AFL supporter. Far out their games last a bleeding eternity. In the few AFL games I've been to I was ready to go home at half time, which half lasts nearly as long as 80 mins of NRL with all their stoppages etc.

I agree that Victoria treats AFL like a religion and that's something the NRL just can't compete with.

But at least it seems that a few people are coming to their senses and converting to the NRL, which is a far better game to view live and on TV in my opinion.

              But then I'm very biased.

If the NRL is such a great spectacle on TV (which we all know it is), why the fark would channel nein not beam it into Melbourne in prime time instead of after mid-night..

                Why I ask you?? Why???

I must admit I prefer AFL (gAyFL? Chook what are you 3?) as a spectacle at the ground. I'm warming more and more to the game live. Only really interested if the swans are playing though but the atmosphere kills that of a league game.

League is made for television. So much more happens off the ball in AFL which you never see on the TV.

League is still number one for me as a sport, but I don't find the atmosphere at the game nearly as exciting.

Because they are absolute farkwits that's why. I would love for rights to league to be won by either 7 or 10. 9 just takes it for granted it's had it for so long. Both in Sydney and Melbourne.

Time for a change in free to air broadcaster.

Because they are so damn one eyed down south.. If something isn't from Melbourne, they do not want to know anything about it.

Not really. They support AFL and we support NRL. There's nothing wrong with that.

99% of them would rather watch a game of AFL than rugby league. In 20 years time it might improve to 97.5%. I recently moved back after living there for over 3 years. I know how popular the game is down there. I actually believe Victorians are more open minded about other sports then we are in NSW. They appreciate rugby league for what it is whereas most league fans just bag AFL because it's not rugby league.

A television station is going to make more on advertising sales if they know more people are going to watch during that time. Would be hard to sell advertising space knowing the majority of the state won't be watching.

Certainly that cannot apply to the media in Victoria...

I also now prefer to watch AFL than NRL these days, I can't stand all the
stopages, inconsistant refs, the video ref is a joke, the blasted held &
move call sounds like they're herding cattle, the bloody shrill of the
                              whistle.

When my team is on FTA then I watch but other than that forget it
