  • Dave Smith and souffs lobby Canberra for massive training centre in Sydney's East

Dave Smith, former investment banker, is off to Canberra with his souff Sydney mates, to lobby their Liberal mates for the construction of souffs' proposed training base in the geographic epicenter of the Randwick Council area.

South Sydney Rabbitohs join with NRL's Dave Smith to lobby Canberra for high-performance facility in Sydney's east

    27 August 2014

South Sydney officials will continue their push for federal government funding to develop a high-performance community centre at Maroubra in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs when they travel to Canberra on Wednesday with NRL boss Dave Smith and representatives of other clubs.

The move comes as NRL and North Queensland officials seek government support for a new 25,000-seat stadium in Townsville and the Eels prepare to relocate to a high-performance centre and new training facilities after receiving approval for the development from Parramatta Council.

The Rabbitohs want to relocate their training and administration facilities to Heffron Park, which Souths officials say would take the club to a level not previously seen in the NRL. The project has the backing of South Sydney Juniors, Randwick Council and the NSW government.

Since losing a $16 million federal government grant last Christmas, Rabbitohs officials have been working with NRL government relations manager Jaymes Boland-Rudder (former chief advisor to ex-Liberal NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell) to lobby political support in Canberra for the facility, which will include a gymnasium, indoor sports arena, swimming pool, a high-altitude chamber and a community centre.

"I think it is the future of the club and hopefully we can get it off the ground," Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said. "We are going to Canberra tomorrow with the NRL, talking to different departments there about assisting us.

"We have been working hard with both the state and federal governments over the past six months, with the NRL's assistance. We will be down in Canberra tomorrow, along with other clubs, lobbying the government with Dave Smith and Jaymes Boland-Rudder from the NRL."

An NRL official said the purpose of the trip to Canberra was a relation-building exercise, involving a meeting with federal parliament's Friends of Rugby League, where such ambitions can be raised informally.

The NRL has a similar relationship with the state governments. It has recently put forward a proposal for a new stadium in Townsville for the Queensland government to consider.

The $190 million development, which would include a purpose-built rectangular pitch for league, football and rugby union, to be constructed as part of a sport and entertainment precinct in Townsville, is a joint proposal from the NRL and the Cowboys.

It is envisaged that funding for the stadium, which would seat 25,000 with the ability to expand to 30,000, would be shared between private investors and the Queensland, federal and local governments.

Meanwhile, the Eels have received approval from Parramatta City Council to establish a training base at Old Saleyards and Dan Mahoney Reserves in North Parramatta, which will include two A-grade fields in the first stage of construction.

"We have been using old and outdated facilities for many years, and this move will allow our players to use the elite facilities they deserve," Parramatta chairman Steve Sharp said.

The first stage of construction will see the Eels upgrade two playing fields, and build flood lighting and temporary facilities at the reserves.

Parramatta City has also agreed to give in-principle support to longer-term plans for a permanent high-performance and community centre, with features to include a gymnasium, player recovery facilities, coaching and video rooms, a theatrette and office space for club administration.

"Our vision is to create a world-class centre that will give the Parramatta Eels the best training and high-performance facilities in the NRL, which will be crucial to the long-term continued success of our club," Eels chief executive Scott Seward said.

It got rejected for a good reason.

I'd be very surprised if they managed to wrestle the money back, these types of things need to be privately funded it's not the role of the government or at least shouldn't be the role of the government to provide funding for ridiculously excessive training facilities.

In all seriousness though if Shane Richardson can last more than 5 mins on a treadmill at the lowest speed I'll chip in for this new gym he wants to build.

People have to remember that Souffs is a public enterprise. A company with shareholders.

Why should they be given millions of taxpayer money just because they try and pretend they are a community based organisation?

I was disgusted when Randwick Council and their Souffs loving mayor Bowen (who describes himself on the website as a lifelong Souffs supporter) were going to throw millions into that shithole.

I pay rates to those scumbags and I have to see them pouring money into Souffs hand over fist (even putting up Souffs flags in the area) and giving nothing to the roosters. There are thousands of Souffs-hating roosters there that take it very personally.

As a Maroubra resident, I can tell you that high performance means something completely different around here.

How much did they spend re-jigging Redfern oval? I think they've used it twice since it got finished.

What's going to happen to that once they move? If they sell it, I'm tipping Rusty will pocket the cash....

              Fark 'em.

Shouldn't this be built at somewhere like Mascot if Souths want to claim it as theirs?

I find it weird. Redfern Oval is freaking sweet. Love it.

Yeah that was bullshit. There were Souths flags at Cloey even, which is clearly Easts territory. It wound me up like you wouldn't believe. I figured there must be some Rabbitohs goon on the council.

Just because 'Eastern Suburbs' is mentioned does not make this a 'Sydney Roosters' related thread.

It is not the role of govt to fund these things. The community needs hospitals, schools, roads etc which is the role of govt.

We went to the Clovelly Hotel to watch the Auckland 9's and I was astounded at the amount of bunnies stickers on cars parked up and down Clovelly Road. I lived there years ago and there were never any around in those days.

Randwick Council eventually buckled to public pressure and had to take down the souffs flags at Cloey Beach.

At the end of the year they even put Easts flags up at Cloey, at Alison Park on the northern side of Alison Road, in Moore Park on the eastern side of the suburb and at Randwick Council Town Hall on Avoca Street.

But I agree it is disgusting they still clearly take sides with one of the two teams inside their local government boundaries.

I'd hazard a guess and say that, due to demographic change, more of their ratepayers are Roosters supporters these days than Bunnies.

I agree. Total waste of taxpayers' money whether you're paying tax to Canberra or paying rates to Randwick.
