  • Three NRL players test positive for ecstasy

AN NRL chief executive has confirmed three players tested positive to ecstasy in September of 2007 after the club's presentation night celebrations.

The club wanted to make a strong statement on illicit drugs, so the coach called in the entire squad of 25 players for testing. One of the players who went positive was a big name still playing in the NRL.

In accordance with the NRL's drugs policy, the club issued the three players fines equivalent to 5 per cent of their contract value, written employment warnings and made them attend drug rehabilitation for a month.

A second positive will result in a 12-week suspension, a fine of 10 per cent of contract value and could see their contracts ripped up.

"We did it after presentation night at the end of the season and we've done it ever since," the chief executive said. "It was our first shot over the bow of targeted testing in the off-season and we haven't had a positive since. The coach pulled everyone in on Monday after the presentation and we tested the whole squad, so it wasn't random testing.

"We'd heard the players were out until pretty late and we've always had zero tolerance towards that sort of thing, so that was why we called them in. All the players who returned positives have since moved on from the club."

The club in question was not the Newcastle Knights, who have been in the headlines for the past fortnight in the wake of the Danny Wicks drug allegations.

Wicks quit the Knights after he was charged on four counts of supplying amphetamines, two counts of supplying ecstasy and two counts of drug possession. Wicks will defend the charges.

pfft ..... I doubt the validity of the article. I can't imagine any CEO would ever come out and say that.

Besides, who has their presentation night in September???????

I hear that's why Dave Taylor joined them. He wants the extra month off.

Actually the Roosters did in 2007 - very early September. Not exactly a stellar year for the Club, in fact we thought we'd hit rock bottom. Little did we know then what we know now.

I remember because it is the last official function I had at the Club. In fact the last time I went to Easts Leagues!!

So some Clubs do have their presentation nights in September, if they know in advance they're not taking part in the finals. Apparently it suits the players as it usually ends their commitments for the season and they can piss off on holidays nice and early.

                NC,
From reading your articles, you are definitely "in the know" at Easts.
                What was your role there?

Seeing she said her last official function at the club was in Sep 07,maybe she is married to Ricky Stuart...

As deep as our rivalry may be, my hatred of the media is far deeper. I still doubt that Canavan (or any CEO) would come out and say that about the club whilst he was in charge. Especially, to a journo.

I'm not doubting that there are drugs in the NRL, just that it's a frogshit article.

Definitely not true thanks. I never took to the bloke, even though I respected him for bringing us a premiership.

Never liked him as a player nor a person, don't like him now either. He's more politician than coach.

I never had any official capacity at the Roosters, I just did the corporate events as well as attending games for quite a few years and got to know people and players involved with the Club.

I'm sure that's all changed in the past 2 years, there's been quite a turnover.

I never thought it was the Roosters players who tested positive Imadog. I was just responding to your question as to whether clubs would have their end of season presentations in September.
