The Brisbane Broncos' title hopes have been dealt a crushing blow, with star fullback Darius Boyd rupturing his Achilles tendon.
The Broncos have confirmed that X-ray results show Boyd has ruptured his achilles tendon with the fullback scheduled to undergo surgery next Tuesday.
Boyd says the injury is disheartening but he is sure it will make him stronger and he will be back in six months time.
"It's disheartening but and tough work to get back," he said."I suppose I'll be more stronger and more determined than ever to get back and play for the Broncos again.
"It's tough, I really enjoyed my time so far. I've only been there for a week.
"I'm sorry I can't be there with the boys but I'll be back. I'm sure it's going to make me a stronger person."
"I'll come back in six months time".
Boyd joined the Broncos squad a week ago for the beginning of this pre-season after following Wayne Bennett from the Newcastle Knights.
"They were just doing a simple training drill, we call them shuttles, and Darius did a turn and that's as simple as it will be. It's no-ones fault, it just happens," Bennett said in a club statement.
"There's nothing we can do now. If you do enough training in life, things like that will happen.'
'We have a team of players, it's no dramas. I wish it didn't happen but it's happened.
"Halfway through the season he will be back playing for us, we'll manage it while he's away and get on with life."
The Broncos only recently offloaded fullback-come-five-eighth Ben Barba to the Cronulla Sharks and fullback cover Josh Hoffman to the Gold Coast Titans ahead of the arrival of Boyd and young-gun Anthony Milford.
Milford is expected to play five-eighth for the 2015 season but can easily slip back into the number one jersey to cover Boyd. Broncos stalwart three-quarter Justin Hodges played fullback on several occassions last season and could do so again while Boyd is out.
"The one thing we do know from previous experience - such as with Justin Hodges - is that players return from this injury to full fitness," Broncos chief executive Paul White said.
"At this stage our thoughts are only with Darius and helping him get ready for his operation so he can begin his recovery with as much support as possible."
