MANLY winger Tony Williams has been fined between $10,000 and $15,000 but has avoided being stood down from NRL football.
Manly yesterday took action against Williams, who was charged while allegedly driving with a blood-alcohol reading of 0.106 in the early hours of Tuesday.
The fine is significant given Williams' contract value is about $150,000 a season, but some felt the big winger should have been stood down from Monday night's match against Melbourne Storm at Etihad Stadium.
Williams will also enrol in a community services and a traffic offenders program.
The player, his manager Isaac Moses, Manly chief executive Graham Lowe and club football manager Steve Gigg met yesterday to discuss the drama.
"The issue is a serious one - a very serious one," Lowe said.
"Tony Williams is a footballer and playing rugby league is his job.
"He will need to play plenty of games to pay for his upcoming fine, which is yet to be decided but it will be more than significant."
Williams lives near Liverpool and will no doubt struggle to attend training each day at Narrabeen.
Asked whether he accepted Manly's punishment, NRL chief executive David Gallop said: "We are comfortable with how Manly treated the matter and that we don't need to be involved."
Williams' licence was immediately suspended by police when pulled over on the Cumberland Highway in Smithfield. He will face Fairfield Local Court on May 3.

So Manly have handled it okay, but when we fined Friend for a similar offence we didn't, and he had to step in and hand down a suspension. No wonder fans get pissed off with Gallop's leadership.
