  • The next in the firing line....

    Has to be the Broncos.

And don't give me the bullsheet about house prices in Brisbane being lower than Sydney. Maybe in Logan and Ipswich, but the players wouldn't have property there.

    Won't happen though.

Broncos would be very nervous. I'm sure we all know who Waldron was referring to when he spoke of a player who left Melbourne for another club and was being paid $200k by a sponsor outside of the cap.

I'm not 100% on the rules but aren't third party payments outside the cap allowed as long as they are not arranged by the club? So, for instance, it was cheating for Melbourne to hook up Cameron Smith with a Fox gig but if his manager had done so it would be okay?

If that's the case (and I'm not clear on the rules) then it's not automatically cheating for Folau to be receiving sponsorship outside the cap, as long as that sponsorship is arranged by his manager (or at least that is how it's disguised).

In this case, it seems like most clubs would be able to disguise these third party payments outside the cap as arranged by player managers rather than the club.

Third party payments are capped at $50k I thought?

                Probably right.

That seems fair. I suppose a typical situation would be if a club was operating at full salary cap capacity and a player was offered $10,000 to endorse gatorade it would be unfair to deny him that extra money. A $50,000 cap and ruling it must not be organised by the club seems sensible, to avoid Prince-like situations where a sponsor's product is essentially part of a reason to sign with a club.

I woould love nothing more than to see Brisbane suffer.
Although I do think that Brisbane (the city) and surrounds offer an excellent situation for players to be paid alot more than their "salary" and within the salary cap as the rules stand.

I'd donate my left nut to science if Souths, Parra, Gold Coast, Manly and/or the Dogs are not over the cap. And unless there is a disgruntled employee that spills the beans, the NRL are too dumb to figure it out. The funniest part of this whole thing is how they are glorifying Schuey for something someone had to steer him into and everyone else knew for 5 years.

I don't feel comfortable pointing the finger at anyone else considering we're the first (or second, behind Broncos) club that comes to mind when people start throwing accusations of rorting the cap.

Some ****wit on Triple M today was claiming that there are people in both the Roosters and Broncos camp that will be looking over their shoulders should the NRL investigate other clubs.

It was Ben Fordham, a so called 'journalist' with A Current Affair, so we should take his 'expert knowledge of rugby league' with a pinch of salt.

The rumours have been around for years and nothing substantial has come of it. A few fines here and there, nothing serious.

And really, could we possibly be cheating the cap considering what happened last year
