Market Value of NRL stars

I'm still waiting for the media circus that will be his first season.

I almost can see this happen.

Lots of media around him for the 1st half of season.

Starts fizzling out as people realize he isn't worth that much money.

He fades out and the club releases him.

He crawls back to the Broncos who give him a juicy contract as if nothing has ever happened.

Yeah I think it is a remarkable signing... he played a bit of aussie rules at high school but how on earth do they know he will be any good? What position will he play? Very few current AFL stars have his frame, roughly 6ft tall and very slight. For $1m/year, they could afford basically any player in the AFL - I appreciate the media value but in football terms, it's mindless.

I will be stunned if it is a footballing success.

Talking to a friend of mine this weekend who works for AFL. Short answer is Hunt was signed by AFL for the same reason Wendell was signed by ARU - to put curious bums on seats. He is the bearded lady of the AFL - step right up and see the freak. He will not last more than one season but by then he will have done his job and been paid handsomely for it.

Yet when Shillington's salary had been discussed previously you were quick to dismiss claims he was earning well over $300,000. Now that the Telegraph has published an "educated" guess that he is earning $350,000, what are your thoughts now?

Apart from the fact that the source is usually full of crap, from his own mouth Anasta said he was 300k. Of course that could be shit, given that he also said it in a telecrap article but I'd still take his word for it over an "educated guess."

Assuming they are of some fact though, Burgess should be paid TWICE what Asotasi is and Lockyer would be worth every cent.
