  • Induvidual player numbers - Progress or Cutting tradition?

They do it in AFL, Cricket and ESL.

It was a feature that separated Sewer League from the ARL.

Would you support the NRL alowing player to have their own numbers rather than the structured 1 - 13 for player positions???

NRL look at changing numbers on jerseys following Steve Noyce proposal
    By Ian McCullough
    May 04, 2010 .

The NRL will consider a proposal to allow players to have their own individual numbers on the backs of their jerseys instead of numbers based on position.

The idea was put forward at a meeting of club bosses in Sydney on Tuesday by Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce and was received warmly by the other clubs.

Noyce said it was time rugby league followed the lead of AFL and cricket and allowed fans to buy replica shirts with the name and numbers of their favourite player on the back.

"It allows fans to identify with a favourite player when they are at the game and when they purchase a jersey," Noyce said.

"The way positions are today the numbers do not really reflect where people actually play and there is a better chance for people to better identify their favourite player.

"There are only two sports that retain numbers based on position and it is time we moved on."

The plan also received tentative support from NRL CEO David Gallop, who admitted although the idea would fly in the face of tradition, it was something that would be looked into.

"All of that stuff is part of the system used in AFL and cricket and there has been a push for it today and we will go away and look at it," Gallop said.

    Silly idea.

There's nothing wrong with the current system, which I prefer.

Maybe is it good for marketing?

I am sure he would have some numbers to back it up.

            Rubbish idea.

            What they should do is
            a) bring back named jerseys
            b) Make jerseys that people actually want, instead of abominations like the Dragons wolverine jersey, and ruining the V on ours.

as is commo knowledge, NRL has no clue how to market the game. Jurseys are an ambomination, and even the logos are too cartoonish, the target market shouldnt be 10 yr olds! Everytime its retro week all the fans comment on how good the jurseys were, why are we going away from that

                That's fantastic idea.

Good to see that the leadership of the game is dealing with the real issues. I thought they were going to waste their valuable time on coming up with a plan to deal with player payments, governance in the game, the loss of talent overseas and to other codes, poor infrastructure, lack of player depth, stagnant junior growth and overall marketing of the game.

Now, allowing players to pick and choose their own numbers that's a real groundbreaking initiative.

                <sigh> ...... no wonder I drink!!!

In defence of Noyce, I think it was put forward in the context of raising revenue in the game

That said, I think its a terrible idea

Personally, i am happy with the numbers we have, Tradition is a good thing.

It also makes it easier to associate positions to numbers (generally).

What they need to really do is look into the Rort that is Jersey sales ! The Companies like ISC who manufacture the jerseys are taking the clubs and in turn the fans for a ride.

i buy my jersey because i want to, but i still think $160 is WAY OVER PRICED !!!

Get ready for it to be over $200 when any rise in the salary cap Muzz.

On the named/number jerseys its def a marketing plus a cost cutting things.

Nowdays they like to the cut og te jerseys to be tailored for each individual, saves time and money if things don't change for a player, week to week

hard to believe they'd waste time discussing something so irrelevant

be interesting watching the "marquee" players at each club fight over #23 though

we'd have to immediately retire the number

it's hard to imagine anything different to what we've got at the moment, but if we did change i'd like to see the NFL style, where each position have a range to choose from. eg backs 1-20, halves, 21-40, forwards 41-60. After a while it'd be easy to know who is playing where, and it's a lot easier than players can choose any number

Problem is usually those spaces are reserved for sponsors.
