Eels star Jarryd Hayne says NRL does not do enough to look after its stars
    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/spo...-1225862794921

HE'S regarded by many as the face of rugby league, but Eels superstar Jarryd Hayne has warned his legion of fans he might not finish his career in the NRL.
In a startling attack on the game's administrators, Hayne accused the NRL of not caring about its star

players and said he could not rule out following the path of league deserters Sonny Bill Williams and Karmichael Hunt when his contract expires in 2014.

"I am only 22. Who knows what will happen after my contract," Hayne said yesterday.

"I could be earning a couple of million somewhere else."

Hayne claimed NRL boss David Gallop failed to listen to him when the footballer warned him of the threat of rival codes.

"The sad thing is that [the NRL] was warned but nothing was done," Hayne said. "They just said 'If you're going to go, then you're going to go, not much can be done.' That was their reaction."

He then added, sarcastically: "They really care about their players heaps."

The comments will surely hurt the NRL, which has all but installed the Parramatta fullback as its No. 1 poster boy. But Hayne refused to hold back on his feelings about the way players have been treated.

"How many more people do we need to lose until something is done?" he said.

"It is just a sad thing, rugby league is such a great game and there are so many passionate players and we are losing them to AFL. We have already lost Mark Gasnier and Sonny Bill Williams [to rugby]. We've already lost these superstars and they're doing nothing about it"

With Broncos centre Israel Folau poised to defect to rugby union, Hayne claimed more could be done to retain the game's best players.

He considered offers from rival codes before he signed a new three- deal with the Eels earlier this year reportedly worth $500,000 a season.

As Hayne made his position known in Melbourne yesterday, his Kangaroos teammates were on the verge of revolt, claiming their match payments for the Anzac Test were embarrassing.

Each player will receive $6000 for taking part in the battle with New Zealand at AMMI Park tomorrow night. "The players do not have a voice," Hayne said.

"We are just given a schedule and told what to do. I hope something can be done. I have family coming down and they have to pay for their tickets.

"We only get four free tickets and have to pay for the rest. The payments aren't big at all so you think they could compensate us elsewhere. There are certainly a couple of issues there."

ARL boss Geoff Carr said the representative payments would be reviewed when the next collective bargaining agreement is struck.

"They were agreed to in the last collective bargaining agreement," Carr said.

People used to be proud of pulling on the green and gold...

What this does show is that Internationals and State of Origin matches need to be sold to TV stations seperately from the NRL, and then players would be paid accordingly...

I can see his point. He, like us, wants to be paid well for extra work he does.

Rugby league is a job to these guys.

$6,000 for 80 minutes of footy equates to $75 per minute. Not bad coin I reckon.

The players are upset that they dont get enough but the problem will not be fixed overnight. If he wants $1,000,000 to go to another code then he should go. Gasnier goes to rugby and has never been heard of again. Why doesen't he get a run in the Wallabies side? Hunt goes to AFL for $1,000,000 per year and now some of the AFL players are saying they are dirty on the money being offered to the NRL players. So they should be.

Defect for the money and be happy. There is not one single player I think that the NRL should "save" from leaving the game. If they do that it sets up a precdent for other greedy knobs.

Absolutely!!! Remember, that's on top of his normal $500k salary and third party payments!

You don't think $500k per season. And then $6000 per rep match after that, is being paid well?

If he plays the entire origin series. And the Australian games in 2010. He could earn close to $42K ON TOP OF his $500K

I don't feel sorry for Hayne because i think he is a carnt...

But, it is not a lot of money in the scheme of things...

He is paid in excess of $500 000 by the Eels for let's say 28 games a year. (Inc. Finals less Byes and Rep duty) That is close to $20K per game...

Are you saying he isn't? Hey I wouldn't say no to being paid $250k-$500k but my company would go broke and I would then be out of a job. What would he be doing and paid if Rugby League hadn't existed?

OK, so let's say the cap goes up or is scrapped altogether. What I can see happening is players like Hayne getting paid more and other average players, the type of players that make up the bulk of most sides, getting paid about the same. In other words, relatively speaking, nothing will change.

                        couldn't agree more

                        they're all replacable

Gasnier, Hunt, Craig Wing - all replaceable

if Thurston/Hayne or whoever want to go and play Rugby or AFL or NFL or whatever, let them go

so what are you suggesting? Players should earn a certain % of their club salaries in rep games?

                            Certainly not..

What I said before was that it is important to sell the rights to these games seperately from NRL matches, so that there is in a way, a kitty that pays for all things interenational or SOO, including players match payments.

Everyone playing for Australia should get the same match payment for sure..

My point with Hayne is that he is in effect playing for Australia for less than half the money he is paid to turn-out for Parramatta..

                              Surley this makes no sense...
