We had hard-working players on low pay e.g. Todd Byrne, Simon Bonetti, Peter Cusack, Stuart Webb, Ned Catic, Luke Phillips, Chad Robinson, Todd Payten, all carefully situated around a superstar core and a dominant backrow.
Our backrow over those years was very very strong. First Fletcher/Fitzgibbon/Ricketson, and then Tupou/Fitzgibbon/Ricketson. With guys like Crocker, Flannery, Robinson all pushing for starting spots too.

I wouldn't say the names of Todd Byrne and Ned Catic in the same breath!

Luke Phillips was incredibly talented. A bunch of games between 2000 and 2002 where our playmakers were out he took over the team and showed real briliiance, kicking and passing. Check out the 2002 season highlights or the Decade of Excellence DVD to see some of his brilliance.
The thing with Phillips is that he was such a great team player that he was able to play the role that worked best within the team.
He also saved a certain try moments before halftime in the 2002 Grand Final that may have changed the course of the game.
One of the very finest chooks in the last 25 years. They don't call him Diamond for nothing.

When he was playing for Manly, I though he was solid at best. So glad to be proven wrong on this one!

Phillips was definitely a diamond.
I see the same thing happening to Shillington, as what happened to Cusack. Solid, hard-working performer with us, goes to another club, becomes their pack leader and a tower of strength.
If Shack didn't get injured, I could have seen the same thing happening to, HOWEVER I think losing Shack is alright if we get Hargreaves.
