What I like, is that every year we seem to have a few new players emerge and establish themselves. Over the past 3-4 years, we have seen Perrett, Pearce, Myles, SKD (although inconsistent), Aubusson, Nuuausala, Symonds, and now Carney and Hargreaves add themselves to the mix as long term prospects. We will always have 'filler' surrounding them - Ryles, Graham are simply experience signings, whilst Minichiello and Anasta probably won't stay beyond their current contracts either.
At the moment, I am very confident that we have built a solid foundation of:
1.
2. Perrett
3. Kenny-Dowall (still a big question mark)
4.
5.
6. Carney
7. Pearce
8.
9. Friend (again, question mark on him)
10.
11. Symonds
12. Aubusson
13. Myles
14.
15.
16. Hargreaves
17. Nuuausala
I would use that framework of talent, and build around it. For example, looking at that, we are clearly lacking in a quality starting front row, so our recruitment methods and junior development should heavily focus on that area. In other words, look into experienced but still maturing front rowers like Hannant, Scott, Weyman, Douglas, Snowden, or GB prop Graham to lead the pack in one spot (after Ryles leaves), and looking at a young bolstering prop from our own (e.g. Kennedy, Maliota, Masoe, Arona), or another U20s team (Taupau, Kasiano, Tariq Sims) to really develop along side them.
Assuming Dugan is coming, or if not, Towers to fullback, another area of issue is our left flank. Same as before, look for a mix of experience and youth in either recruitment or junior development. A player like Gordon, who wouldn't cost a huge amount, but is good enough to be a well-performing NRL regular with a good try scoring strike rate and outstanding goal kicking, is the ideal sort of player to look at.
It is always good to have solid players like Conn and Guerra in the squad as depth too - one of the key success stories over 2002-2004 was our bit-part contributors like Robinson, Kidwell, Webb, Catic.Last edited by The Mack; 05-30-2010, 01:47 PM.

Anyone who can't see that is blind..
The man is the most freakish outside back (who has proved he can play 5/8th at a pinch) to play the game since Brett Mullins...& we all know what happened when we took the punt on signing him...He made Hegarty look like Renouf in the '02 GF..
Signing him should be considered a priority if he is available..
Anasta is a prime example, thanks for highlighting it.
Inglis is an outside back, is not a leader, and most definately is not a 5/8th. The only thing that he has proven when playing 5/8th is that he is not one.
Also, says a lot if Melbourne are prepared to let him go ahead of Cronk, Slater and Smith. Massive money like that should be reserved for the spine of the team.

You surely don't believe that do you?
But you do rate Anasta...soooo....

Don't believe what ?
Inglis is an outside back, check.
Not a leader, check.
Not a 5/8th, check.
Melbourne willing to let him go ahead of Smith, Cronk, Slater, check.
Spine of the team, most important aspect, check.
Anasta not worth his salary, check.
Note, i never dismissed Inglis being the best outside back in the comp.
Also, you will note that i have never rated Anasta highly as a player, i do defend him against undue critisism because i believe some people make outlandish and foolish claims. He's not as bad as people make him out to be, on the same note, he isn't worth the big dosh either (out of his control).

We are set long term with our halfback, five eight and fullback. All class young players. Inglis would be just what we need - a strike centre and there's none better than him.
No reason we can't get James Graham
too as we need better props. Gus is also a big fan of his.

You defend Anasta like you are his mum..
And if you believe what you have posted about Inglis then...well......
Inglis' would be sensational at fullback..Spine position...
Inglis is still only 23 years of age...Leadership is something that will come to him as he further matures..plus he wouldn't be bought as a future captain...so you have a moot point there..
Melbourne would be willing to let him go because he is not playing fullback (they seem to have a pretty handy one as it is)..& because they cheated, one of the Big 4 have to go...It was never going to be Smith,& Cronk is the cheapest of the 4,so he stays too...Simple common sense..
Keep defending Anasta against all us "Nasty,Unreasonable,Mean People"...
And keep thinking Inglis would be a bad buy..
And keep enjoying mediocrity..

Don't believe what ? That he won't be a good fit at our club ? I have never questioned his talent as an outside back.

Dugan would be better and wouldn't cost as much. Would bring more to the team.

Doesn't have to be a captain to display leadership. Players either have leadership qualities or they don't, they are usually displayed from a young age. So yeah, i agree, moot point

Cronk, Smith and Slater are the most important players in Melb, the team is run around them. They realise that as long as the spine is solid, their team will perform with or without Inglis.
Keep defending Anasta against all us "Nasty,Unreasonable,Mean People"...
Keep pinning the world troubles on him, ignoring the bigger picture.
And keep thinking Inglis would be a bad buy..
... for our club.

The same mediocrity i have been enjoying for the last 5-6 years when we have been buying up all the players at their peak and ignoring young talent going through just to find ourselves in the rubble ?
Don't try and compare the purchase to Inglis to Freddy, they could not be any more different.

On the reasonable assumption that Inglis would be asking $400k+, this is too expensive for a centre. You saw this with Saints and Gasnier, he was too expensive to justify playing at centre so they tried to make a 5/8 out of him and it didn't work.
There is a certain salary range that is reserved for 1, 6 and 7 and you can get in a lot of trouble paying big bucks for other positions.
Discuss.

Spot on mate.
There are exceptions to the rule when you have a player that brings more than just football abilities to the table ie Petero, Hannant, Myles

I agree that Inglis, with ball in hand has no competition in attack.
I think Dugan has a better passing game from the back.
Inglis has him done on pace and size.
Dugan is much better in defence especially his positioning and commitment.
Look, the reason i like Dugan is that he's cheaper and younger with a great on-field attitude and bucketloads of potential. We can mould him into the Roosters culture (cue drinking and brothel jokes) and make him our own, whereas Inglis is Storm through and through. He's won grand finals, played Origin and represented Australia there. So i would question his commitment to us, especially with the big packet he would get.

What do you base Inglis not being a good fit on?..That he is not a spine player..He would be the greatest fullback to play the game...He certainly looked it when he first came into grade...AS A FULLBACK..replacing an injured Slater...He was a freak straight off the bat...
HE won a GF at 5/8th (since recinded of course, but he got the Clive Churchill Medal)
Dugan would be a better fullback is the statement where you really lost touch with reality....
Dugan is undoubtedly a fantastic talent..but Inglis is THE REAL DEAL already..no waiting for him to mature...or fulfill his pootential..Been there,Done That..
Inglis would not be bought as a captain...so your point is moot..
You are truly deluded if you don't put Inglis in Freddy's class...but i knew that anyway...Inglis will become an Immortal..One of the most physically gifted, natural football players to strap on a boot..Any sane person would kill for him at their club..
Enjoy the mediocrity..I'm glad you are not in our recruitment team..
