OSCAR-Winning Australian actor Russell Crowe was forced to deny he was dead following bogus reports that he plunged off a mountain while filming in Austria.

A representative for the New Zealand-born "Robin Hood" star said the rumour that he fell to his death on Thursday were "not true", the New York Post reported.

A report said he fell more than 15m to his death in the mountains near Kitzbuhel, Western Austria, at 4.30am local time.

The poppycock, started by a fake news website, spread like wildfire and was reported by New York radio station Z100.
