  • The death of rugby league...

I truly fear for the quality & direction of the game...

OLSEN FILIPAINA, the legendary former Kiwi five-eighth, believes the AFL has hit the mark with its targeting of Polynesian-rich western Sydney.

But not in the way it expected. The AFL and its new Greater Western Sydney franchise have targeted the Polynesian population after signing Queensland and Australian rugby league star Israel Folau. But Filipaina believes it is children other than those of Polynesian heritage who will flock to the code because they are, on average, physically smaller than Polynesian children in other codes.

''They did hit the right spot,'' Filipaina said. ''The mothers and fathers are going to take them to AFL. That's what I think is going to happen. There's no way parents are going to let their 20-kilo son play against 40-kilo Polynesians, while they're young and growing up and still got all their bones intact. It's very hard for them.

''When the news came out that the AFL was going to hit the western suburbs, I went, 'Oh, league have got a fight on their hands'. The Polynesians will end up staying with league and the Australian kids will end up going to AFL. You see the size and weight difference compared to the Polynesian kids. It's only normal for parents to say 'No, you can play AFL or soccer, but you're not going to league'.

''And the AFL's not mucking around, judging by the amount of money they're spending. And they're not going to go away.''

From what I've seen and am living through, mum's only have control of their boys until 12-13, after that, if the boy want to play league, union or nothing, then that's what happens. At some point the mum realises that she has to let go and let the kid decide what they want to play.

IF he is only thinking thats whats GOING To happen then he is living in fairy land.

ITS ALREADY HAPPENING. But you know what, its nots the mums taking their kids to AFL, its the kids wanting to go there, not just because of the size difference , but mainly because its run better and because all kids can have a go without all the toothless deadshits that are part of the RL culture

Thank you KB......There is no way its the mums who are pushing hteir kids into what sport to play.....
And from what I have seen as a mother and a manger, the dads are the pushy ones, trying to recreate the football careers they never had in thier sons....

I know there is no way in hell I would encourage my boy into playing GayFL.....and they send enough recruits around to schools in our areas trying to convert them....

Get out to any league field on a cold saturday morning, and you will see that Rugby League is alive and well in the Western Suburbs of Sydney......despite the invasion....

            Spot on, so true.
And more often than not it's these ex-league dads who take junior RL way too seriously and are the abusive and aggressive ones on the sideline.
