So your happy with him making a very comfortable living out of the game, but then snubbing his nose at the fans as if to say they aren't deserving of his time or knowledge?

Bennet snubs his nose at the media - not the fans. And I can't blame him with some of the halfwits that pretend to be jounalists.

Bennet is only too happy to talk to fans and supporters at post game functions - even if they support other clubs.

I dislike Bennet because (1) he coaches the dragons (2) he used to coach the Broncos and most importantly (3) he snubbed the Roosters. If he had of actually signed up with the Roosters and had the same success he has had with the Dragons, I would be his biggest fan.

totally agree with the sentiment of this thread. what i really hate about him is the whole fien fiasco. even though bennett knew that hornby was out the day before it wasnt until 2 hrs before the game when he arrived at the ground that fien was told he was playing first grade at half. bennetts rationale was that their defence would win them the game so it didnt really matter. to disregard the importance of arguably the most important position on the field shows the height of his arrogance. Even worse is the fact that he has hornby who isnt even close to halfback material on some massive pay packet at half where if he actually spent that money on a proper halfback they may have had a competition victory by know and that goes for soward as well but at least he is a half. Its little things like this and just the general way the dragons play - like against us they had ALL the ball but could not crack our line and eventually score because humans only have a limited energy capacity so something will eventually give. These things are not the hallmark of a great team and i hope they get beaten accordingly again and get kicked out of the finals.

As for his record as a coach, i agree he has done some remarkable things in the game but lets be honest, who couldnt deliver premierships with the kind of teams he has had at the broncos. For almost his whole reign there until melbourne became a prominent team, the QLD SOO team consistent of the broncos team plus one or 2 others and then the australian team was 1/2 broncos as well. They should have one every year if you ask me. Then you look at his retention/recruitment record. he let a raft of excellent players go at brisbane most notably the problem brisbane have had prior to them signing wallace was a halfback yet bennett was the bloke who decided prince wasnt good enough for his standards, nor was james o'connor of the wallabies or luke priddis and the list carries on. Even look at his track record at the dragons. over the past 2 years he has let go of linnett, whare, beau henry and re-signed gasnier and hornby.

ANyway, bottom line is that yes he has achieved a lot as a coach but there are aspects of his demeanour and decision making that often get overlooked which imo is very wrong especially considering the criticism and rightful criticism that smith copped at times at parramatta over the retention of certain players

I doubt you would say that if you were a Saints fan. They want to know what their coach thinks and the arrogant **** won't tell them.

I am always eager to know what Smithy has to say and he obliges.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. If we didn't have fans then there wouldn't be a need for the media. The reason why the media exists is because the fans want to hear what he and other people involved in the game have to say. By snubbing the media he is in effect snubbing the fans.

Exactly. It's not as if every fan can just walk up to Wayne and start a conversation. We hear things through the media

Agreed, but Bennet's beef is with the media. The fans get the fallout.

Bennet doesn't have a problem with fans. I have ventured to post match functions in enemy territory after games with my friends who are Dragons supporters, and Bennet was only too happy to talk to us. He even almost smiled when I had a subtle dig about his treatment of the Roosters.

That's the issue I have with his stance on the media. Do you think they are concerned that he won't talk to them? His refusal to do so is a story in itself. The only group Bennett is hurting with his current position on the media is the fans.

The media try to get the coach to blow up and say something that will create a headline the next day. The same questions each week - "What did you think of that try", "What did you think of that penalty against you". Now let's just say Bennett agrees with all the harsh calls against his team? Do the fans agree with him? If Smith was to win the premiership for the Roosters, I would not really care that he snubs the media.

We all bitch and moan about the media week after week here. We all complain how stupid they are including the commentators, yet you expect a coach to drop all that and answer their idiotic questions?

Just as Stuart is a hot head, Bennett plays his cards close to his chest. The media have shot themsleves in the foot with the way they approach the coaches AND the game. Goon on him I reckon. I love it that he gives little away. I bet the media hate the post match interviews with him. He has the upper hand.

If he was our coach and he was doing the exact same thing and he had us on the top of the ladder, the opinion would be a lot different.

If Smith was to lose the premiership decider due to a dodgy refereeing decision I'm sure you would like to know his thoughts on the matter.

I watched the press conference on Monday night, there was nothing antagonistic about it from the press. They asked some pretty basic questions that the average fan would have asked him, if given the chance. Maybe Bennett is 'too big' for the game. I think he owes a lot to the game and its fans and if answering a few questions from the media means that he promotes the game a bit and gives some fans some joy then I think he should do it.

He wasn't too big for the game when he was touting his disabled kid charity. Or too big when he was flogging the book. He plays the game when it suits him and ducks out the back of stadiums after getting flogged when it doesn't.

No man, player, coach or bloody referee is bigger than the game. That's why I don't give a tinker's cuss about Greg Inglis' paycheck or Wayne Bennett's tantys or whether Quade Cooper gets overpaid.

I do, however, give a goddamn when referees stuff up.

What an arrogant revolting turd he is.

All of his answers were short and he couldn't hide his aggression towards the reporters.

Even Gordon Tallis said that it was a disgrace because he should be trying to promote the game and he is really speaking to the fans and not the press.

I don't think I can watch Mr Handshake again.

It was like a visit to the dentist.

                          He and Soward deserve eachother.
JT - He is still the same Wayne Bennett that you were prepared to move heaven and high water, in order to bring him to Easts...

I would probably love it if he was our coach.
