Reality is going to hit Souths in the next few years when these back ended contracts start to take effect. Some of their talented juniors will leave because they won't have the cash to pay them, would be funny if guys like Pettyborune and Farrell and the like ended up in RW&B!

Can someone explain what is meant by a back ended contract?

Signing for a small sum early in the contract that increases each year.

Example Souths signed Inglis for (i forget the exact amounts) $180k next year, but by the end of his contract he will be getting something like $600k.

It allows you to fit someone in earlier but you have to lose players each year as their contract rises.

Sure, I'll have a go. Let's say you agree to pay a new signing $900,000 over 3 years which suggests the following "normal" annual breakdown ...

          Year 1 - $300,000
          Year 2 - $300,000
          Year 3 - $300,000

In a "back-ended" contract, the same $900,000 would be allocated like this (for example) ...

          Year 1 - $200,000
          Year 2 - $300,000
          Year 3 - $400,000
