  • Souffs want SBW

I've read the rumour here before, but just saw it in the herald...

RUSSELL CROWE has made an audacious attempt to lure Sonny Bill Williams to South Sydney.
Not content with snaring the prized signatures of superstars Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis, Crowe has spoken to Williams about the possibility of shifting to Redfern after the Rugby World Cup this year.
It's understood that Crowe proposed the move after being introduced to Williams by mutual friend Anthony Mundine.
Crusaders and All Blacks star Williams will become one of the most sought-after stars in either rugby code when he becomes a free agent at the end of the year. There will be no shortage of offers from NRL clubs - Williams was recently spotted dining with Parramatta coach Stephen Kearney, prompting speculation the cashed-up Eels are a contender for his services.
However, Crowe has displayed an uncanny ability to snare his man since taking over as co-owner of the Rabbitohs. Internationals Roy Asotasi, Burgess and Inglis have all joined the club after being wined and dined by the Oscar-winning actor.
Mundine was an influential figure in the Inglis deal and is also close friends with Williams. When Williams controversially walked out on the Bulldogs in 2008, Mundine offered to pay the compensation money demanded by the NRL club.
Mundine has also been helping the dual international prepare for his boxing bout against Scott Lewis on the Gold Coast on January 29.
The salary cap will again be one of the biggest stumbling blocks in Williams's potential return to league. The Inglis deal was initially knocked back by NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert and the Rabbitohs were forced to release local junior Beau Champion before it was ratified.
Williams, 25, could command upwards of $1 million a season following his selection for the All Blacks last year.

    - I don't follow much union, but to call him a crusaders/all blacks star is a bit rich... he's played no S15 and struggles to get a spot in the all blacks squad. I think he played 1 or 2 games for them off the bench where he was quiet?
    - 1 million or more a season... you are joking! Any club willing to pay that much for 1 player deserves his BS though (oh wait... Souffs... will probably ditch Luke, Asotasi, Talanoa, Wesser, Taylor and a few random Souffs juniors for him (would that free up 1 million?) Either way they will still have a rubbish team... Phone Chucker is good as signing players who are in the media spotlight. Doesn't mean they are any good! But they are in the media spotlight...
    - Doubtful the world cup will bring SBW much glory. NZ has every trophy in the cabinet except the world cup... some random lowly team will foil them again this time...
    - SBW should be banned from the NRL because he walked out on a club secretly, and went for a fat pay packet in union. Well done and he escaped legal action, but the NRL needs to be tougher on union converts IMO (Big Dell banned for coke but allowed to play NRL, Tahu... absolute waste of time/money, Lote... will we ever know what he did? Probably drugs.) Ban the lot of them... if I told my boss I was quitting for a fatter pay packet I'm pretty sure he would blacklist me if I applied for my old job again later down the track after coming into conflict with the new company...

NRL also needs to be tougher on team management pushing players out before their contracts are up.

I love it that Crowe is turning into everything that he says he despises. Souths will be known as the team that tries to buy a premiership. One title I don't mind this club giving up.

My dad couldn't even look at me this morning when he read this he is that embarassed about what Crowe is doing to his team. Massive LOLs for me though. It's one thing to do 'chequebook' Rugby league, but it's another to have huge sagas around signing players in the most unprofessional manner on top of being a hypocrite about it.

He played well but a starting spot will evade him until they play the weak teams.

                            LOL...

There's no way they'll be able to afford him, they'd need to lose half their entire roster.
