When it's us losing narrowly with a 3rd rate team in the 2nd half against a solid Bulldogs squad (who we flogged in the first half with maybe a 2nd rate squad) then fair enough it's just a trial.
When Souffs get smashed with a full strength team bar Greg Inglis (after the same squad nearly lost to a semi-professional Newtown Jets outfit some weeks earlier), it's not just a trial. It's a serious pre-season hit out and they got flogged.

Still... don't wanna go into round 1 all cocky and get smashed. Always happens against rubbish teams if you under-rate them...

True, but a fortnight out from the start of the comp, you would expect teams to have their attacking and defensive structures in place. Trials will give you an indication of where the team is headed. Quite often teams play trials in the midst of very heavy training. For example, they will have a heavy session before the game and appear flat as a result.

However, teams should appear organised and purposeful even though they may be a little off the pace. Form emerges off the back of that as the season progresses.

Saints were always going to hit the ground running considering they have the WCC next weekend.

I am a firm believer that you have to get your pre-season right in order to have half a chance.

You make some good points. I guess I'm saying that you can't account for the unpredictable element on the day that sees Easts go in with the wrong attitude and the other team go in with the correct one. Under those circumstances, anything is possible irrespective of form.
