  • Cayless announces retirement

Veteran Wests Tigers prop Jason Cayless announced his retirement on Wednesday, just 16 days ahead of the NRL season kickoff.

Cayless, who won a grand final with the Sydney Roosters in 2002, played 110 NRL games for the Roosters, Parramatta Eels and Tigers.

The 31-year-old has struggled with chronic shoulder problems in the back half of his career and was limited to just three matches for the Tigers in 2010.

Cayless, who also had four seasons with English Super League club St Helens, retires with one season left on his contract.

"I've been unlucky with injuries over the past 12 months which has probably brought forward the decision a little early," Cayless said.

"But the game has been fantastic to me over 11 years so there aren't too many complaints.

"Hanging up the boots gives me a good opportunity to take a break for a while before deciding what to do with the next stage of my life."

I will always like "Cavey"..He was the massive unit we needed to complete what was close to a perfect side..

When we bought him i thought he was the "shit cayless"...The form he showed with us proved me wrong on that one..

Hope he has a pain-free retirement..

Ditto. I thought he was a bad buy due to knee troubles. He played some great football for us and I'm very happy to be proven wrong. Thanks for your efforts in the red, white and blue mate. Enjoy your retirement.

I loved him when he was at the Roosters and he did some great work.
I remember when it clicked for him, he took a hit up and went straight through the line and almost stopped as if he didnt know what to do next.
He had a lot more confidance after that .

Captain caveman, absolutly loved him! He and morley, along with the Yak made one of the most formidable forward combinations that rugby league has ever seen!

The other reason why the cayless boys are fantastic, round 1 2003 vs parra at the sfs. i brought my doubles, i got the unlikely combination of homeside 8/opposition 8. By the end of the game (actually half time) i was $100 richer thanks to the 2 props that were the cayless brothers!

Spewing you didn't get that on sportstab.......would have been a hell of a lot more than $100!

One of my favourite games ever.

Remember when we kicked off and our players ran from 10 metres behind the half way to get up there and smash them. That started in that game and Parra started doing it after half time.

              Sheer dominance.

I can't believe that we only have one comp to remember from that period - and arguably the best team was not there to beat.

I remember Bill Harrigan's comments in the paper the next day saying how he had never seen such aggression in defence and how intimidated the Eels players seemed to be.

The first tackle of the game set the tone for the season - ruthless, smash mouth, intimidating defence. I loved the way Fittler would kick on the second or third tackle just so our forwards could smash them into submission.

I'm with JT...........how did we only win 1 premiership in that time?

)We won one claytons premiership like Saints last year
The NRL made it quite clear we wouldnt win another one for a while -ask Gould about that one.
Shall I list the non GF performers?,Cayless 1 from 3 Ryan Cross none ,Brad Fittler did nothing in all 5 except kicked a 40/20 because he was knocked out and didnt know where he was kicking it.

Shall I mention the multi talented Dafinchy?
Then there was the very angry coach who grew a big head

it is a disaster that our sheer physical dominance over 4 years was reflected in 1 flag.

you just dont get two eras like that in a lifetime
