Police want to speak with Benji Marshall following an alleged altercation in the Rocks in the early hours of this morning.

Marshall - the new face of NRL - is believed to have been at the scene of a physical altercation at 3am this morning.

Marshall, 26, spent last night hosting Children’s Cancer Institute Australia’s (CCIA) first annual Footy Rocks.

Police released a media statement confirming an incident involving a 26-year-old male.

Police attached to The Rocks Local Area Command are investigating an alleged assault outside a fast food restaurant in Sydney’s CBD overnight.

About 3.20am today (Saturday 5 March 2011), a verbal altercation allegedly occurred between a 24-year-old man and a 26-year-old man in George Street, near the intersection with Bridge Street.

The 26-year-old and another male allegedly assaulted the 24-year-old before leaving the area.

The 24-year-old sustained a small facial laceration and reported the alleged incident to The Rocks Police Station.

An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, and police are hoping to speak with a 26-year-old man who may be able to assist with inquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact The Rocks Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

And this is on the NRL front page as of a minute ago,

        Tigers ready to roar

Benji Marshall says last year's narrow finals losses to the Dragons and the Roosters has primed his Wests Tigers to go all the way in 2011. Full story
I am not going to say, 'We will win it', but we feel we have the players and the coach to go all the way. Benji Marshall

Whilst i agree 100% BigMike, just wait for the garbage like .....''Benji is a great bloke that would never do anything like that'' or '' He was antagonised and the other bloke started it''
I can just see it now...

Now we have ANOTHER scandal. A Tigers' fan has just stolen this post of mine and posted it as his own in the Tigers' forum. Assault is bad, but plagiarism is just plain EVIL!!!

Why didn't the Roosters use that as an excuse for Todd Carney.

"The beer started it." and "He would never have drunk it if not for the antagonism of the beer."

                Let's give Marshall a break.

He was the host for CCIA's evening where I'm sure he contributed to scores of thousands of $ being raised for a most worthwhile charity.

My reading of the story (from the paper) is the victim gave Marshall some lip to which Benji split his lip. The bloke then blurts to police and then the media finds out. I wonder if the "victim" informed the media. I don't know.

It seems it must be hard to be a public face in public these days.

The only reason our Todd was pulled over was because the police recognised him.

Absolutely, it won't surprise me in the slightest if Benji was antagonized and if that's the case, I'm glad Benji hit him.

Difference is boss, the victim isn't paid a couple of hundred grand a year to play football and is currently the face of league.

The only time players seem to get in shit is when they're allowed out after dark. How about along with getting rid of exotic betting that they stop players going out.

Or at least give them a bloody curfew.

Fair point. Obviously, I don't know Marshall, but he does seem to be a good bloke. (Though he did punch Pearce in the semi last year.)

However... if I said something insulting to, say, Phil Rothfield, one day and he responded with physical violence, I'm pretty sure that Phil would be charged with assault, not me.

Are you implying that the police targeted Carney.

I mean, just because it was in Souths territory. And just because Sean Garlick played for the Roosters and left after his wife and Brad Fittler got rather close, and the fact that Garlick would have friends in the Maroubra LAC and would be sweating on a reason to discredit the Roosters.

I mean even if we accepted all that, there would have to be a player with a bit of form for past misdeeds that would be a high profile scalp for the police to use to discredit the Roosters.

And the only player that the Roosters have on their squad list who fits that bill is...oh, Todd Carney.

He's volunteered to be a role model for thousands of people (I'm assuming he accepted the "face of the game" job). Who cares if the other bloke gave him some lip, doesn't make it alright for Benji to assault him and make the NRL look like shit once again.

On another note, he went off and got his mate to help him, really Benji?
