That said, saying that these heavily cliche'd symbols (that I reckon originated from the music industry) are anything to do with drugs/death is a joke. East 17/The Backstreet Boys used these symbols and smoked the odd joint before any of these supposed gangsters. That and most of the supposed "ghettos" that get ranted about in raps are more like Paddington/Surry Hills/Darlo (i.e. standard inner-city suburbs.) It's the same people making the music now, just a new marketing image (when will rap just die out like boy bands? PLEASE!!!!)
My only problem with these symbols is that I thought they were more the kind of things that the Bulldogs would do. (Did anybody else go INSANE in 2009 when the Bulldogs had farking Jah Rule cranking every time they got the ball?) That said, they are rap music symbols, it's not like players are getting Rebels/Comancheros tats, or supporting any legitimate crime gangs that exist worldwide (let alone in Australia.)
The influence sux because it's all American and Rugby League is iconic in Australia. I don't want the game getting taken over by American/rap music influences (the Dogs can keep their rap music.) That said, is it illegal or worthy of reprimand for players to like rap music/associated symbols?
Quite simply no... it's a bit of a joke, and probably more up there with how Japanese girls always seem to do a peace sign with their tongues poking through it when posing for photo's. Pop stars do it without reprimand, and they're just silly kids signs from pop music anyway.
