Former rugby league player John Elias is facing further charges in relation to the NRL betting scandal.

New South Wales Police say 48-year-old Elias breached his conditional bail by harassing a witness in the investigation of last year's alleged scandal via text message.

The ABC understands the witness is a sports figure but not from the NRL.

Elias was first charged at the beginning of this month, along with player-agent Sam Ayoub.

Both are accused of defrauding betting agencies with wagers on a first-points scoring option in the Bulldogs-Cowboys game in Townsville last August.

Elias now faces fresh charges with two counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

He has been refused bail and will appear in Bankstown Local Court tomorrow.
