After months of encouraging negotiations over the summer, Souths officials were informed before the season started that Bennett would not be joining the club and began pursuing other options. But when Bennett called last week to say he was again interested in coming to Redfern, they were obligated to re-open talks with the game's most successful coach and a deal with Wigan's Michael Maguire was put on hold. It's believed he called after leaving a meeting with Broncos chief executive Paul White last Thursday night where Bennett advised he would not be returning to Brisbane. Despite Bennett telling the media on Sunday that he had made his decision, the Rabbitohs only learnt that he was going to Newcastle shortly before the Tinkler Sports Group announced his four-year deal with the Knights.
