  • Plan B for $ouff$ (Michael Maguire)

WIGAN coach Michael Maguire is set to take over the reins of South Sydney as the club reverts to a plan that was put on hold late last week when Wayne Bennett suddenly revived his interest in taking charge of the Rabbitohs from next season.

Souths are believed to have been close to finalising a deal with Maguire after turning to the highly-rated former Melbourne assistant when months of encouraging negotiations with Bennett over the summer stalled abruptly.

However, talks resumed after Bennett announced he was quitting St George Illawarra at the end of the season, and the Rabbitohs were forced to delay signing Maguire - who last year steered Wigan to the Super League premiership in his first season as head coach.

The delay is believed to have caused some frustration at Souths as the club had moved on from Bennett after initially being firm favourites to sign him during the off-season. But when he again expressed interest, they were obligated to reopen talks with the game's most successful coach.

As a result, it is understood Maguire had not told Wigan officials of his intention to return home and coach the Rabbitohs next season. He was expected to do so overnight. An announcement on his appointment, which is believed to be for three years, may happen as soon as today.

The 37-year-old, who played 18 first-grade games as an outside back for Canberra and Adelaide Rams, is held in high regard by those who have worked with him at the Raiders and Storm, including Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy and Parramatta's Stephen Kearney.

Maguire was assistant to Bellamy, along with Kearney, at the Storm between 2004 and 2009 before leaving last year to steer Wigan to their first premiership in 10 years.

He has worked closely with star Rabbitohs centre Greg Inglis and English second-rower Sam Burgess said yesterday that Wigan players in last year's Four Nations squad had spoken highly of him.
''From the recent England camp, and before this whole Wayne Bennett-Michael Maguire saga happened, the Wigan guys were very positive about him and said he brought in high standards and had some good theories,'' said Burgess.

''You don't need the world's best coach to win the premiership … you just need to have the best set of players and team.''

Rabbitohs assistant coach Gorden Tallis, who played under Bennett at the Broncos, said missing out on his services was not a big deal for Souths.

''This is a club that I think had other coaches in the pipeline so the players … I don't think they were too worried at all,'' Tallis told Fox Sports. ''Some of them didn't want him to come, some of them would have wanted him to come - blokes that had been coached by him before. But this is a club who wants somebody to come here for the right reasons.''

I rate McGuire, but good luck taking Souths on as your first NRL club.......I'm backing it will end his career.

I don't think he is a happy camper because they almost signed a deal with him and then backed off when Mr Handshake said he was still a chance of going there.

Has $ouff$ changed enough that a coach can come in and stamp their authority on the team and club. Probably not and this is where it will all come undone.

There have been a couple of coaches at $ouff$ that have attempted to bring discipline and player accountability to the club and each has failed.
Why because the cronies behind the scene support the players over the coach.
They seem to be content with complacency and a laziness that is a perceived trait of an aligned culture.

Basically until $ouff$ get serious and let a coach come in and take control they will never be anything but the joke they are. I believe this is probably the prime reason Bennett did not choose $ouff$

Proof that the Tallis/Bennett hate continues to burn bright.
I bet big Gordie breathed a huge sigh of relief when his foe announced Newcastle as his preferred option.

I did not know there was an issue between Tallis and Bennett.
Whats the story there, did Bennett tell Tallis his workload was crap

If what we have heard is true, Bennett seems to get a kick out of stuffing around clubs and their arrangements, only to leave them hanging.

Wayne is no saint. He is actually quite a carnt.

Is winning 6 titles with a State of Origin line-up that impressive? or that travesty we saw in October 2010?

His "success", using dummy half forward passes in every set in attack, and standing way offside in defence for the second halves of matches, after the refs have grown sick of blowing penalties, has been a consistent feature of his style of coaching.

Will that be allowed to continue, or will he have to adapt? Like we were when the NRL changed the rules because we were too good in 2002?

                    I agree 100%.

One of thos 6 was their win against Melbourne which was the most biased and unfair refereeing performance I had seen in a Grand Final - until last year's one, which could not possibly be topped.

If I were Souths board, I'd rather have Michael Maguire, who I assume is not a manipulative, greedy, dry drunk, bitter old bastard.

Dry drunk. What a perfect moniker for Wayne - you have hit the nail right on the head there...

His father was an abusive alcoholic.

Alcoholism is a genetic predisposition. Bennett fights every day to not drink. If I didn't think he was a blight on the once great game of Rugby League I'd almost feel sorry for him.

He's also a lot younger and possibly in there for the long term.
Tinkerbell bought out the Knights and reckons he can buy a premiership by snaring Snowden and Bennett... good luck. Guess he'll get Boyd too (which will require the sacking of Kurt GidlEEEE.) Great way to unite Newcastle (which Tinkerbell sees as being Newcastle + New England all the way up to Titans territory.)

It will be good seeing Souffs, Newcastle and St Merge all as ordinary/shite teams.

Sometimes it skips a generation, for example my father was a completely sane individual.
