NRL Total Ban on Alcohol

How would it go if the NRL put forward a total ban on alcohol?

I was never a hot shot, but I was in the NSWIS bronze squad aaaages ago (as a kid.) They paid for my coaching and schooling... in return I had to sign off on a number of things including:
- No alcohol/smoking (although the AIS never reprimanded Taurima for that one? Pretty sure they have the same clause.)
- No dangerous sports (skiing, water skiing, wake boarding...etc were all on the list.)
- No drugs outside what NSWIS' doctors gave me.

Now granted I got what... 15 grand worth of training/schooling (max!) out of that each year... could NRL players on 400k+ (cash in hand plus professional coaching and any education they want) have similar conditions imposed upon them?

Questions:
- Would it wreck the culture?
- Would there be more/less incidents?
- Would everybody just switch codes to avoid it?

Good point. In his autobiography, Beetson, has a great old chuckle about the things they did while they were on the piss. Seriously, I believe the reason we hear about the 'deeds' of players more often is because of Facebook, Twitter and forums like this. Oh and cameras and videos on phones.

It would have an affect on the way players bond for sure. Look at any other work place. People that get on well socialise well and become friends. The same would apply to footy players but even more so as these blokes play for each other.

There would be less incidents but what needs to be kept in perspective is the amount of incidents each year compared to the amount of players registered.

I think a large number would.

I think it would be grossly unfair to have players not being able to participate in something that everyone else takes for granted. Having a few beers with your mates. I don't care how much they earn and the fact they are professional sportsmen, they have the right to have a life and enjoy themselves.

More and more often we expect people that are in the limelight to behave a certain way that we ourselves would not impose on ourselves. It is the tabloids and gossip mags that are partially to blame for this.

It is difficult to give up the grog even if your not a massive p1ss head because of the social side. I bet most people on this forum - that enjoy a drink - would not be able to totaly abstain for a footy season.

Most of the population can have a drink and be fine, some people turn into dickheads and make really bad decisions on the drink.

That is not just a Rugby League issue, there will be a bunch of people every night doing stupid stuff on the drink, they just don't have the profile so it isn't reported.

You can't punish the majority of NRL players who do nothing wrong for the misdeeds of a few.

Australia had dry Sundays up until 1981 or 82 if I'm not mistaken.

Alcohol is the great remover. It removes inhibitions, bad memories and self control.

These are grown men you're talking about, I doubt the players would accept being told " no more drinks for N.R.L players, and where would brewery's take their sponsorship dollars if this was accepted. Rugby League was always a working man's game and alcohol a favourite recreation for the working classes.

lol if a player Holds the piss in such high regards that it means more to them then the sport then i say let them go.



I can not see any negatives in banning it. Only possitives, Players would not be making idiots of themselves plus they would be even better on the field. its a win win for the NRL.


As for advertising, I doubt if players were banned to drink the sponsers would pull out, The advertising goes towards the viewers not the players.

Now days this is there job, there whole life has been playing footy, Not working on construction sites etc


Im sure most of you here would drop the drink for a chance to play footy for a living and get good money. Its a dream job for anyone who loves the sport.
