Carney and Pearce are also established halves. Dally M, Kangaroos + Blues call-ups are 3 things Soward lacks. With Smith coaching him and te Roosters not having Carney, would Soward be an established half? No...

I think people in this thread are over and under estimating Soward.

He has some great qualities as well as some deficiencies.

I'd love him back instead of the alcoholic, because he is more stable off field.

I'd be very interested how he would work with Pearce in a pure running role.

His kicking game is the best in the nrl apart from thurston. Long and short.

ism22. you obviously dislike Soward. But since you are niether Bennet nor Stuart i do not really think it matters. Moreover, every time Carney self destructs and Pearce plods through another uninspired performance their potential grows dimmer.

I do dislike Soward, but that's a different matter.

What are you smoking mon? I've just written 2 big posts saying how he's a solid, establish half... but that's now after being guided by Bennett and a damn good team. Fact is he was struggling to make first grade when he was a Rooster. I don't think he would have established himself as well at the Roosters. Carney has issues, but ANYONE will tell you he's better than Soward.

We wouldn't have a premiership winning Soward. With the chooks he would have a spoon to his name and would not have been able to improve as rapidly as he has with all the talent/support the Dragons have to offer him (which we simply don't have.) Also it wouldn't have been Soward/Pearce as our pairing!!! We would have lost pearce (so wouldn't have a HB) and... just yuck... Soward was too inexperienced to lead us to victory at that stage. Would I take him now if Carney dropped dead/refused to stop drinking... sure.

That aside, WHO BLOODY CARES WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN/COULD HAVE BEEN? We have Pearce and Carney now, that's our halves pairing and they got us to a GF last year! We have the best halves pairing in the game when those 2 are firing... stop bloody complaining about it!!!

There is no point comparing the Bennett renovated Soward with the Soward that we let go. Bennett spent the first six months with Soward
just convincing him not to drop his head every time he made a mistake - "staring at divots" was how Bennett described it.

Finch had a GF ring at one point. Many average players have won a GF. Doesn't make them champion players.

Soward does his job for the Dragons mainly with his kicking. He is protected in defense and his play making skills are of decent first grade standard but not as elite as some think. He has internationals all around him in the backline and has the best forward pack in the comp. I can't see Bennett go out of his way to get Soward to follow him to Newcastle. Good luck to the guy. He made the right move for his career. If he was still a Rooster, he wouldn't even have a GF berth.

If we still had Soward, he would play 6.
For SOO Soward is not in competition with Pearce for a spot.
One is a 6 and one is a 7. Soward is not a halfback and if Hornby got injured, Soward wouldn't play halfback.
I am happy with Carney instead of Soward. I think we made the right decision.
