  • NSW Leagues Club closed

Was sad to learn the NSW Leagues club closed its doors late last year (particularly as we were about to go in and take advantage of the good value bistro!....those sorts of places are vanishing from the cbd...everyone's trying to be upmarket). It was also a good place to kick back and relax and have a drink while watching sport if you were in the city. It's sad that there will be no home for NSW League.

We used to go there for Friday lunch a few years back (oh I just realised that was 12 years now! Yikes!) when I worked in Chifley Tower. Real pies with veges and mash, nice ladies behind the counter, nice nostalgic place to look at old photos of the Bears, Jets etc. Yeah, I can live without another quinoa salad or kale smoothie type place in the CBD..I thought it looked rather dark the last time I walked past but then again they took my bus stop away from that part of the city too..Sigh..

Never been there but sad news...

Is that cafe on top of Woolies still there? It was always great value for money in the centre of town.

Not the CBD but No Names on Stanley Street was always a favourite (I grew up in Darlo). It's a bit lame now because it used to be $5 for a pasta and unlimited cordial (which was a bargain). Now it's the same school table setup (nothing changed) but it's like $15 for that same pasta. I can get that across the road at Bill and Toni's for the same price. Not saying Bill and Toni's is classy or anything, but it's not some shonky little room hidden away in a back alley.

The Woolies cafeteria is still there but not on the top floor anymore. One of my sisters and I went into that Woolies at Christmas just to get the Kris Kringle chocolates for work colleagues and we went upstairs for a look. It's still as busy as ever but there is only 3 or floors of retail levels now whereas there used to be 8 with the cafeteria on top. It's very depressing downstairs in the basement supermarket and I feel sorry for the people who work there as it's claustrophobic. My bus now stops there in the mornings but I rarely go in.

I used to come home sometimes on the 389 bus past Stanley St but that bus has now been diverted too so I can't catch it anymore. Yes I remember the white paper tablecloths and orange cordial too at No Names. Haven't been there since around 1992. There is a pub on Bondi Road with a No Names as well.

Went there a few times......good times and sad to see another piece of hybrid nostalgia with old school low brow depart our fair metropolis.

Twas many a good time for the lads to share,
To eat a Big Ben some peas and mash, to partake in Reschs, Old or New and be merry,
To stick up your finger at the merchant banker from near Australia Square
To consume a New or two, get in a blew and head home on the Manly Ferry,

I used to work in the city late 70s early 80s and I can tell you nsw leagues disco Friday nights was sensational. The women were amazing the beer was club prices.
The disco was on floor 3 and Ill never forget the night the lift door opened and two guys were flat on their backs, ayoung aboriginal guy walked out of the lift his name-Hector Thompson.
            Great memories from that place.
